HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finland has detected H5 bird flu in wild birds in Aland islands, Baltic Sea, Finnish Food Safety Authority said on Thursday.

The office said it would make further studies to find out whether it was the highly pathogenic H5N8 virus which has hit wild birds and farms in several countries in Europe and the Middle East in last weeks.

The Finnish government is due on Friday to order farmers to keep flocks indoors, the office said.

The first confirmed case of H5N8 bird flu has been detected in Finland amid a recent outbreak of the disease in Europe, the Finnish Food Safety authority said on Friday.

The highly pathogenic H5N8 virus was found in wild birds in the Aland islands in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden, the office said in a statement.

The government on Friday ordered poultry farmers to keep flocks indoors to avoid the disease spreading.

Four dead peacocks - bird flu probably also in Mariehamn

In ?land it looks as if the bird flu would have spread to Mariehamn.

Four peacocks were found dead today in the green area Lilla Holmen in Mariehamn's eastern harbor. Two other peacocks were dying. Authorities suspect bird flu and have cordoned off the entire island for security reasons.

The result of the flu samples should come early next week.

H5N8 is the virus strain that has spread in Europe and which cause severe disease in poultry. No people have been infected by it.

H5N8 viruses in wild ducks

It is now clear that the dead wild ducks that have been found in ?land carrying the bird flu virus H5N8.

The case in ?land's first H5N8 bird flu found in Finland. Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira is now establishing a restricted zone of ten kilometers around the sites where the birds were found, on Lemland and V?rd?.

At poultry farms in the area are additional controls and the movement of poultry in the area is limited.

Agriculture and Forestry Ministry has stated that all poultry to be kept indoors, at least until May.

AVIAN INFLUENZA IN FINLAND

?land Lemland found in V?rd? and tufted ducks were found dead in the area 25/11/2016 completed studies of highly H5N8-type avian influenza. The highly pathogenic form results in high mortality rates in most poultry species. This is the first time that Finland states of highly pathogenic avian influenza. In addition, peacocks and chickens Mariehamn bird kindergarten submitted to Evira has found the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 30/11/2016.
