Viral infection on the increase in the West

Thursday, August 09, 2007

THE Lautoka Hospital has reported an increase in viral infection but it does not mean there is an epidemic, said acting Western Health Services director Doctor Eloni Tora says.
Dr Tora said with the general outpatients department closed, the hospital had noted an increase in the number of people coming up with viral infection or normal influenza.
He said only the Accident and Emergency Unit was opened for emergency cases but people were going to hospital with viral infection.
"That's what I meant when I said that there was an increase in viral infection cases that was seen," he said.
"When we attend to people coming to the accident and emergency department, we found out that most were just viral infection.
"These cases would normally be seen at the general outpatient department but at the moment it is closed but there is no outbreak."
He said six nurses were manning the accident and emergency department.
He said the ante-natal mothers who were sick had been assessed on the severity of their conditions.
"The ante-natal mothers are now being triaged."
Dr Tora said that medical attention would only be prioritised to those with worse conditions.
With 19 beds at the ante-natal department, only nine patients were there with two registered nurses assigned to them.
He said a student nurse and a ward assistant were helping out there.
Dr Tora said that five wards still remained closed at the Lautoka Hospital and they were at present reviewing opening them.
He said that 33 health centres and nursing stations were still closed as three nursing stations were now opened.:tiphat: http://www.fijitimes.com/story.aspx?id=68124
