REPORT to the nearest medical centre if symptoms of fever and body rashes appear, warns the Ministry of Health.

There is a rubella outbreak with three reported cases in the greater Suva area, confirmed Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu.

Dr Francis Bingwor of the National Adviser Family Health said the ministry intervened to raise awareness after they received reports of two females and a male aged between 19 and 24 years who developed symptoms of rubella at the Fiji School of Nursing.

There are suspected cases for other areas like Samabula, she added...

Fiji is experiencing a rubella outbreak in the capital Suva.

There have been 11 confirmed cases of the disease and people have been told to go straight to a medical centre if they show signs of fever or rashes.

Fiji's national adviser for family health, Dr Francis Bingwor, told Pacific Beat health authorities were unsure what had caused the outbreak.

But he said it may be linked to the way rubella vaccinations were rolled out.

Prior to 2004 rubella vaccinations were only offered to young girls in Fiji, he said.

And 10 of the 11 people who contracted the disease are young boys or young men.

Dr Bingwor said those with rubella have been advised to avoid young women and women within the first three months of pregnancy.

The World Health Organization says rubella infections during pregnancy can result in miscarriage, foetal death or congenital defects...

Fiji's rubella outbreak is continuing to spread with 28 cases now confirmed in the greater Suva area.

It is the first outbreak of the virus in Fiji since 2002 and the majority of cases are men.

The country's vaccination program initally focussed on pregnant women to prevent congenital rubella and was not offered to men.
