Disease outbreak in Fiji

An outbreak of leptospirosis has killed four people in Fiji and infected 42 others in the past four months.

FijiLive reports the figures have been released by the Health Ministry, which says the number of cases for the first quarter of this year is higher than for 2010.

Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu says anyone with symptoms of infection, including body pains, blood clots and fatigue, should immediately see a doctor.

Share A total of seven deaths have been recorded due to leptospirosis as another person died this week in Lautoka Hospital.

Health Ministry spokesperson Peni Namotu said there is a need for people to seek proper medical treatment rather than traditional medicine and take heed of the symptoms of body aches, fever and blood shot eyes.

The infection is commonly transmitted to humans by allowing water that has been contaminated by animal urine to come in contact with unhealed wounds.

7 people have died of leptospirosis in the Western division and 46 cases have been recorded between the months of January and May this year.

Health spokesperson Peni Namotu has urged the public to take all necessary precautions.

Health records decrease in leptospirosis and typhoid cases

No further deaths from leptospirosis and typhoid have been recorded by the Health Ministry.

Health Ministry spokesperson Peni Namotu told FBC News the public has been taking their advice seriously and the number of people being infected has reduced significantly.

?There has been a decrease in the international trend of people coming into hospitals around the country and people have been taking our advice and coming in early when they experience fever-like symptoms. Currently there have been no more deaths reported.?

Namotu adds a reduction in the number of people suffering from typhoid has also been recorded.

A public health emergency was imposed for the province of Bua after a large number of people were reported to have fallen ill from typhoid.

One person died in February and Namotu says the Health Ministry is doing all it can to contain the disease.

However he says they have received positive results recently which show that the public is adhering to their advice.

Leptospirosis claims 10th victim

FIFTY-five-year old Suliana Lewavou of Nadi became the latest person to succumb to leptospirosis, while another is in serious condition at the Lautoka Hospital emergency unit.

The death of Mrs Lewavou last month increased the national death toll to 10.

This was confirmed by the hospital's consultancy physician, Dr Deo Narayan.

He said 11 severe cases were reported to the hospital last month and people have been urged to take extra precaution.

Dr Narayan said leptospirosis needed to be taken seriously since lives had been lost through negligence and late presentation of sickness at medical centres.

"There were 28 severe cases and 10 deaths reported so far," he said.

A 30-YEAR old farmer has died after suffering from leptospirosis.

Ministry of Health spokesman Peni Namotu said leptospirosis is an infectious disease spread through the urine of infected wild and domestic animals.

And he urged members of the public suffering from headache, muscular pain, sudden onset of fever and redness of eyes to visit a doctor.

He said symptoms were very similar to that of flu, was often underestimated or ignored, leading to dangerous complications and even death.

Mr Namotu said the farmer, who was of Indian descent, passed away last Sunday.
