The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is warning people to get treatment early as the bacterial infection can be deadly.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is warning people to get treatment early as the bacterial infection can be deadly.

The ministry said cases of meningococcal disease have increased in the last few years, with 18 reported this year up until 21 February.

Last year there were 48 reported cases, nearly double the number in 2016...

MoHMS is reporting both confirmed and suspected cases. Therefore, there have been a total of 38 cases from January 1st to April 5th , 2018.
Of these, 22 cases are laboratory confirmed, and 16 are either suspected or probable cases (WHO case definitions). There has been an average of 2.5 cases per week in the last 4 weeks...

Fiji having trouble getting meningitis vaccine

Fiji is having difficulty procuring vaccines for meningococcal disease which has struck the country.

FBC News reported the government is working with the World Health Organisation and UNICEF to get the meningococcal disease strain C vaccine.

The acting prime minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, told Parliament there is huge international demand for it making it difficult for Fiji...
