Fiji's Health Ministry declares dengue outbreak in Western Division with 200 cases reported

Fiji's Health Ministry has declared a dengue outbreak in the Western Division, with 200 cases recorded since the beginning of this year.

The country's Western Division consists of three provinces in western and northern parts of Viti Levu: Ba province, Nadroga-Navosa province, and Ra province.

The majority of cases are among those between the ages of 10 to 29 years old.

Cases of dengue fever are expected every year during the rainy season, from October to April, and after heavy, unfavourable weather events.​..

Fijians are being urged to continue to remain vigilant and take protective measures against dengue fever as the Health Ministry recorded over 2,000 new cases nationwide from January 1st to February 23rd this year.

The Health Ministry says 2,436 dengue cases were reported with the Western Division recording 1,411 cases, the Central Division reporting 559 cases, the Northern Division recording 419 cases, and the Eastern Division recording 47 cases.

The Ministry says the surge in dengue cases this year is attributed to the heavy rainfall and flooding that have impacted the country over the past months.​..

Dengue fever kills three in Fiji

A total of 3,671 dengue cases have been reported in Fiji from January 1 to March 9 this year, with three confirmed dengue fever deaths.

The Western Division, where the outbreak was declared early last month, continues to lead the trend, with 2,077 laboratory-confirmed cases, the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday.

There have been more than 950 dengue hospital admissions so far this year, with more cases expected as health facilities continue to report new cases, the report said...

The Central division now has a dengue fever outbreak, the Ministry of Health has announced.

A total of 1090 confirmed cases of dengue fever from January 1st to March 23rd, 2025, were recorded.

“Over the last three weeks, a surge in dengue cases have been observed in Navua subdivision, Suva subdivision, and Rewa subdivision,” said the Ministry.​..

Two Xavier College students die in dengue-related cases, 1 case under police investigation

Two families in Ba are mourning the sudden loss of their children, both students of Xavier College, as the Ministry of Health confirms that one died from dengue while the other death, ruled as dengue-related, is now under police investigation.

The Ministry has conveyed its condolences to both families and acknowledged the pain they are going through after losing their loved ones.

The Ministry says as part of its ongoing dengue prevention efforts, a medical team visited Xavier College and the home of the student who died to carry out investigations and awareness.

They say Adult Mosquito Spraying was conducted at these sites, along with clean-up campaigns and spraying in dengue hot-spot areas in Ba.​..
