Dengue fever outbreak in Nadi and Ba

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has declared an outbreak of dengue fever in Nadi and Ba. Since the beginning of 2018 there have been 312 confirmed cases of dengue fever in the Western Division, with the majority of cases from Nadi and Ba Subdivisions. Numbers of confirmed cases have continued to rise above expected levels for the Western Division at this time of the year. We are also closely monitoring an increase in cases from other subdivisions in the West.

The Ministry is especially concerned with the high numbers of confirmed dengue patients requiring admission; 140 admissions have been recorded so far this year in the Western Division. Of these, 51 were admitted at Ba Mission Hospital, and 54 at Nadi Subdivisional Hospital, with 10 in Sigatoka, and 25 at Lautoka Divisional Hospital. Again, the majority of admissions have been in Nadi and Ba, with each receiving approximately 10 per week. Reports from the Western Divisional Outbreak and Response Team are that most of these patients have been admitted with severe dengue...

...A total of 862 confirmed dengue cases have been recorded in Fiji from the period of 1st January to 16th February 2018, giving an incidence rate of 48.5 per 100,000 population. Central division has recorded 41 confirmed dengue cases and Northern has recorded 509 confirmed dengue cases and Western division has recorded 312 confirmed dengue cases...

DENGUE remains a concern for the Health Ministry, with more than 800 positive cases recorded in the country so far this year.

Health Minister Rosy Akbar said in an effort to curb dengue numbers, the ministry had rolled out a "Fight the bite clean-up Fiji" campaign aimed at destroying mosquito breeding grounds...

Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar confirmed that 1024 dengue cases have been recorded in Fiji from January 1 to February 23, 2018.

?That is a very high number,? she said.

Together with the Local Government, Ms Akbar said their awareness, clean-ups and spraying programmes were on-going.

?A lot of people are questioning us as to why we are not having a major spraying,? she said.

?They will have their major spraying after their clean-up campaign...

Five Confirmed Dengue Cases In Navua Peri-Urban Area

Delegates of the Serua Provincial Council meeting at Namaqumaqua village were informed that there were five confirmed cases of dengue fever in the Navua peri-urban area.

The announcement was made by the Senior Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) Beqa, Namosi and Serua, Doctor (Dr) Anaseini Maisema.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun, Dr Maisema said Aedes Aegypti was the species of mosquito which was responsible for spreading dengue...

948 dengue cases

THE North has recorded 948 dengue cases so far with most cases from the Labasa area.

A statement from the Health Ministry stated the highest number of confirmed dengue cases in the country were from the North.

However, the statement read they were experiencing a downward trend in cases received within the division and so far there had been one confirmed dengue-related death in Labasa.

"At the highest peak of this outbreak, there were 136 patients per week confirmed to have dengue fever in the West of the North Division (mainly Labasa)," the statement read...

1854 dengue cases

FIJI recorded a total of 1854 confirmed dengue fever cases between January 1st and March 8th this year, says the Ministry of Health.

In response to queries from this newspaper on the issue, the ministry said that while 562 cases were recorded in the West, with a downward trend in cases recorded every week, the Central Division was recording a "notable upward trend" in recent weeks.

"At highest peak of this outbreak (to date), there were 93 patients per week confirmed to have dengue fever in the Western Division," the statement said.

"This came down to 60 in the next week, and then 30 in the following week and last week the number of cases fell below the expected number for the Western Division at this time of the year."

The statement revealed a total of 342 cases were recorded in the Central Division...

There has been a decrease in the number of dengue fever cases recorded nationally in the past six weeks.

The number of cases in all divi?sions is now at levels expected for this time of the year and, there?fore, the ministry has announced the end of the outbreaks declared earlier this year in Macuata, Nadi, Ba, and Suva.

From January 1 to May 31, 2018, there were 3437 confirmed cases of dengue fever recorded in Fiji.

The ministry recorded four deaths from dengue during this period.

Of the total confirmed dengue cases recorded, 1242 were from the Northern Division, 1315 from the Western Division, 865 from the Central Division and 15 cases of dengue were recorded from the Eastern Division.

At the peak of the outbreak, an average of 236 cases were recorded nationally per week.

In the last four weeks there have been an average of 59 cases per week, which is within the expected range of cases for this time of the year...
