FCC?s Cell Phone Radiation Standards Need Review, GAO Report Says

Cell phone radiation standards need to be updated, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (?GAO?) announced in a report released August 7, 2012. Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients injured by cell phone radiation, reports that the year-long review found the Federal Communications Commission (?FCC?) standards outdated compared to international standards. The FCC?s radiofrequency (?RF?) energy limit was set in 1996 and has not been updated since. The GAO report states that the outdated limit may fail to reflect recent research on cell phone radiation, and testing requirements may not reflect maximum exposure in all conditions. For example, the FCC also does not account for devices carried against the body, such as in pockets. ?With mobile phones in the pockets and purses of millions of Americans, we need a full understanding of the long-term impact of mobile phone use on the human body,? Representative Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat who called for the GAO report, commented.**
