Tarhuni, a naturalized U.S. citizen and a Portland-area resident for 35 years, was supposed to return Jan. 17 from his native Libya, where he had been helping distribute medical supplies for relief group Medical Teams International. But when he got to the airport in Tunisia, he was told he could not board the flight.

FBI agents eventually interrogated him, he said, including one who flew in from Portland, Bryan Zinn. They asked him about his religious beliefs and his contacts in Libya, and whether he met with Islamic extremist groups and other questions he said he thought showed bias against his Islamic religious beliefs.

He told them he had not and agreed to undergo a lie-detector test -- until they insisted that he sign a waiver of constitutional rights, he said. ...
