Doves falling from the sky caused panic in the Zora neighbourhood of Stara Zagora?s on November 10. The flock came to the neighborhood shortly before noon. Minutes later, citizens reported that most of the birds started falling from the roofs of the buildings, creating a fearsome picture. Health and veterinary control authorities were notified. Some of the dead birds were examined and poisoned grain was found to be the cause of the birds? demise. The grain might have been treated with chemicals against rats. Most likely, the doves ate grain from nearby fields. The collection of the dead birds started only after tests established the cause of death. Before that, speculations of bird flu were circling the neighborhood. No one wanted to touch the carcasses. The dead birds were burned.

This has happened / reported (in Avianflutalk) from at least 2-3 other localities in the last 6 months--birds poisoned and dying in masse from pesticide-laced grain

Re: Falling from the sky (Bulgaria)

I'm thinking of the seasonal timing - it was about this time last year that the first birds in Croatia (& a few other places) died of H5N1. So I hope the tests in Bulgaria were thorough.
