Extremely High Number Of Flu Cases At County Courthouse

CORPUS CHRISTI - There have been an extremely high number of flu cases at the Nueces County Courthouse.

Picking up documents at the county courthouse is something Maranda Butler had to think twice about because she's pregnant and, therefore, more susceptible to the H1N1 virus.

"I try to stay at home as much as possible. I don't go anywhere unless I have to. I hope there is a vaccine available soon," Butler said.

The vaccine isn't expected to be available until October.

Several people at the courthouse have been sick, including Assistant District Attorney Mark Skurka, who is currently in the hospital.

Another county employee who was diagnosed with the swine flu was recently released from the hospital.

"We're concerned just like everyone else about what's going on," County Judge Loyd Neal said.

While there are a number of flu cases throughout the building, the courthouse isn't shutting down. Business is going as usual, but all departments are taking several safety precautions.

"We're getting face masks and hand sanitizers and making sure everyone wipes down. We have disinfectants to spray filling cabinets that we have," District Clerk Patsy Perez said.

Neal also said he is working with the city-county health department to make sure the courthouse is a safe place to be.

"We are not stopping the business of the county. We don't want anyone to get sick, but it is no different here than going to the mall or movie theatre," Neal said.

Corpus Christi and surrounding areas are popular tourist destinations, and with summer vacation rounding up I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of people travelling there this weekend and next.
