Extreme genomic CpG deficiency in SARS-CoV-2 and evasion of host antiviral defense

In Belgium, genetic material from SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in a cat. The cat is from a household with one person who had Covid-19 and had symptoms. A week later, the cat itself developed shortness of breath, vomiting and diarrhea and was therefore examined. No other possible causes that could explain the symptoms in the cat have been identified. The animal recovered. The Belgian authorities consider the evidence to be an isolated case and point out that the symptoms indicate Covid-19 , but this is not clearly proven. A positive cat was also reported from Hong Kong.
A current study from China shows that cats and ferrets can be experimentally infected with SARS-CoV-2 and that the virus can also be transmitted to other species under the special experimental conditions. The study from China is published here:
https://doi.org/10.1101/2020.03.30.015347

In another study, a total of around 140 cats from the city of Wuhan, particularly affected by Covid-19, were examined for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. 102 of these were sampled after the outbreak of Covid-19 , 11 of them had formed antibodies, which suggests that the infection had been passed through.

A New York zoo has also reported infection with a tiger that has probably been infected by a keeper. Since tigers are big cats, this report is not very surprising. The tiger, in which the virus was detected, showed mild symptoms of the disease (dry cough). Similar symptoms were also found in some other big cats (tigers and lions) in the zoo.

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut also showed in a study that ferrets can be infected and can pass SARS-CoV-2 on to other people under test conditions.
However, this does not allow any conclusions to be drawn as to whether cats and ferrets secrete virus amounts that are sufficient to infect humans. It remains to be investigated whether such infections can actually occur. So far, there is no evidence that pets have infected people. The keeping of cats was not identified as a risk factor.

The SARS-CoV epidemic in 2003 also resulted in infections in cats, without this being relevant for further spread.
This evidence therefore does not currently change the assessment of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut: According to the current state of knowledge, pets do not play an epidemiological role in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 / Covid-19 .

:tiphat:I think that if ferrets and cats can be infected by owners or scientifically, they are a risk.. now dogs may harbor the disease in their intestines but that is still up in the air. I have never seen anything about rats but they are warm blooded and breath and eat anything dropped, so I am thinking they probably could catch it too;)
