On behalf of the people of the United States, I offer heartfelt condolences to the families of the miners who died in the Pike River Mine explosion, and all those affected by this tragedy. New Zealand has lost 29 brave and hard-working men who will be mourned around the world.

Earlier this month I visited New Zealand and I saw the famous Kiwi strength and spirit for myself. You have come through adversity before, and I know you will do so again. Today, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kiwi sailors and supporters have held a moving on-the-water ceremony to pay respects to the Pike River miners at the Louis Vuitton trophy in Dubai

Team New Zealand sailors wore black armbands during fleet racing and sailed with the ensign at half mast. The Italian boat Mascalzone Latino, which has Kiwi Gavin Brady as skipper, also had its ensign at half mast.

All 29 names of the miners were then read out before the wreath was slipped into the sea.

Pike River: Heartbreak in a beautiful setting

The uncle of one of 29 men still underground in the Pike River Coal mine says a trip to the mine site was heartbreaking.

"You're going up to such heartbreak in such a beautiful part of the world," Brent Palmer, who lost his nephew Brendon Palmer, told NZPA.

Buses lined the street outside the Grey District Council earlier today to take the families to the mine.

They walked out of the council building onto the buses this morning, some carrying large bunches of flowers, one man holding a framed picture of his loved one.

Up to 500 family members travelled up to the site and saw photos of the men's tags that they placed on a board before entering the mine. However they were not taken to the mine entrance or put in any areas deemed dangerous.

"The tags to me are so poignant," Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn told the Herald.

Pike River mine conditions challenging - expert

The Pike River mine is one of the most difficult an Australian mine safety expert has dealt with.

Efforts are continuing to retrieve the bodies of 29 men killed after a series of explosions in the coal mine, about 50km from Greymouth. The first was on November 19.

David Cliff, an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland, is advising on the Pike River operation which is relying on a jet-propelled machine brought in from Australia to extinguish the fire before rescuers can enter the mine.

Pike River mine not going to receivers yet

The Pike River mine will not be handed over to receivers while the operation to recover the bodies of the 29 workers continues, police say.

"We came here for a search and recovery operation, we still are looking... if it is possible...(to) recover some of these guys and bring them home."
Superintendent Gary Knowles, who has headed the police operation since the November 19 explosion, said today.

He said the mine would not be handed over to receivers at this stage.

"It may be handed over to another government department, It's not a case of making the mine safe, it's making it inert, it's making the environment stable so we can hand it over," Knowles told Radio New Zealand.

He said until they could stabilise the mine no one would be going in - "we're not talking days, we're talking multiple weeks...any plan of action may be some months".

Pike River Coal to Implement Mine Stabilisation Plan

The New Zealand Police and Pike River Coal Limited (In Receivership) (the Company) announced today that the Company has resumed control of mine stabilisation operations at Pike River Mine.

One of the receivers of the Company, Mr John Fisk, said today that the Company intends to implement the Mine Stabilisation Plan prepared by Company management in conjunction with expert mining advisers. A separate fund has been set aside for this purpose.

In implementing the Mine Stabilisation Plan the Receivers will engage a panel of experts, including experts previously advising Police, so that there is continuity of risk assessment advice. It is hoped that the Mine Stabilisation Plan will eventually result in a sustainable inert atmosphere within the Mine that is also free from any underground heat sources.

"Stabilisation is a necessary first step to allow the investigation of options for the Mine. However, there can be no assurance that the Stabilisation Plan will be successful or, even if it is, whether other options such as an eventual re-entry to all or part of the Mine will be feasible" said Mr Fisk.

"Should re-entry be feasible, the Company will make sure the families are informed and will call in Police so that all necessary safeguards relating to any recovery efforts and preservation of evidence are put in place."

Mr Fisk said ?the Mine is the principal asset of the Company, and the prospects for the Company are inextricably linked to the prospects for the Mine. If the Mine Stabilisation Plan is successful we will look at the best options to maximise value. However, at the present time, no timetable can be set for the next steps.?

The Receivers of the Company have worked closely with the Police since their appointment and will continue to keep the Police and families of the 29 men informed as the Mine Stabilisation Plan is implemented.

The Commissioner of Police, Howard Broad reiterated Police's thanks to the families for their patience and co-operation during the period that Police has led the search and rescue and recovery operations and has worked with the Company on stabilisation operations at the mine. "We will continue to support the families and to keep them informed of Police developments" said Mr Broad.

Police family liaison, the website and the SMS message service, together with Police welfare support, will continue.

Pike River body recovery up to five years away - expert

Recovering the bodies of the men killed in the Pike River explosion will take several years with July 2015 being the earliest possible date, an independent expert says.

The explosion in the Pike River mine on November 19, 2010, killed 29 men working in the mine.

Recovering the bodies has been a priority for many of the families of the dead men.

Engineer Bruce McLean was commissioned by the families to write a report examining possible issues around reclaiming the mine tunnel and recovering the men's bodies.

His report concludes that if there is a successful sale of the mine, recovery of the bodies could be completed between July 2015 and June 2017, dependent on a number of factors, including completion of a new shaft to establish ventilation in the mine.
