Experts urge proactive measures against swine flu

Published: December 21, 2009

According to the Provincial Secretary of Health Hashim Raza Zaidi, the Sindh government has made elaborate preparations throughout the province to halt the spread of a swine flu pandemic. ?For this purpose, two special isolation wards have been set up at Civil Hospital and Services Hospital, whereas, preventive drugs have been distributed in all districts of Sindh. Moreover, three seminars for awareness against this potentially fatal disease have also been conducted. The health department has specially deputed 2 doctors, along with paramedical staff and other personnel at the Karachi Airport to check the infected passengers on arrival. The Health Secretary assured during a briefing that, although there is no imminent danger of a swine flu pandemic in the province, the government has proactively braced itself to counter any critical situation relating to H1N1. The Secretary also said that the existing 2 bed isolation wards at some hospitals are easily expandable to 20 isolated beds, in case a wider transmission of H1N1 begins to occur. The Sindh Health Department is constantly updating itself through effective networking with the Federal department of Health,? he said.

The Secretary also said that the existing 2 bed isolation wards at some hospitals are easily expandable to 20 isolated beds, in case a wider transmission of H1N1 begins to occur.
In 2001, the total number of hospitals in Sindh Province was 324 (link, page 4). Assuming that each of these has an isolation ward of two beds, scalable to 20, it would mean that hospitals in Sindh have the capability to isolated 600+ to 6000+ patients. Realistically, the isolation capacity in Sindh is most likely at the the lower end of this range.

Considering that Sindh Province has in excess of 30,000,000 inhabitants, it is unlikely Sindh will be able to segregate hospitalized H1N1 patients when the number of infections increase. The lack of isolation facilities in Pakistan is concerning given that Pakistan has already experienced clusters of H5N1 infections and deaths.
