Expert calms German alarm over Italy-based insects

May 13, 2008, 14:49 GMT
Stuttgart - Fears of dangerous mosquitoes from Italy spreading across the Alps and fanning out to spread fatal disease are overstated, a leading academic entomologist said Tuesday.

The Asian tiger mosquito, scientific name Aedes albopictus, has become widespread in the Tuscany region and other parts of Italy since the 1990s and has been sighted in Germany. Striking in daytime, it bites rapidly before it can be swatted.

Claus Zebitz, entomologist at Hohenheim University in Stuttgart, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, 'Even if it can spread dengue fever, which is dangerous and common in Africa, the risk in this country is very limited.

'One should not get unnecessarily hysterical.'

Zebitz said a German was more likely to catch dengue from an infected acquaintance coming home from a tropical holiday.

The tiger mosquito, originally from Asia, has been spreading in many nations round the world.

The entomologist said the northwards spread of Mediterranean insects into Germany as a result of climate change was natural.

'If the climate in Central and Northern Europe keeps getting warmer and bitterly cold winters become a thing of the past, most insect species will extend their range,' he said.

Insects were champions at adaptation. The world had 250,000 plant species, but 1 million insect species.

Insect invasions could only be resisted by acting fast.

'We have to respond to possible dangers very early to be on the safe side,' he warned.

Other pest species headed north include the cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) which attacks tomatoes and the green citrus aphid (Aphis spiraecola) which is resistant to most pesticides.

Claus Zebitz seems to ignore the last year cases of Italy and the Pateur Institute Research conclusion stated two years an half ago, we only start to undertand to long impact of those new strains of diseases carried by the Aldobicus and Aedes Mosquitoes.

I agree Snowy,

it seems downplaying.
The tiger ousted the previous domicile specie where it established.
In those lands 100 years ago spreads Malaria.

Now it would be enaugh that in some niche became established an infected tiger colony (not necessary in Italy), to starting spread the illness, because the full mosquito destruction will not be possible for now.

We can paraphrase the:
"'One should not get unnecessarily hysterical.'"
in
'One should get necessarily hysterical.'
for those in the tiger afected areas.

Tropical,

Why not lobby your health Ministries to do like some Health Ministries did one and half year ago, call tham and tell them to come and see all preventive measures that can be done.

In India alone over 300 millions people where spare because of those preventive measures.

Altough I can read German I am not speaking it so well otherwise I would call cause, I have talk to people in la r?union and had first degree testimony how such infections is troubling ones Life. IT IS NOT FUNNY AT ALL.

Give a call you might make a difference, it works sometimes you know.

Snowy

If you need help PM me, been there, done that and it worked

Thank you Snowy for your support,

I pm you for help if things rises in my country zone, but generaly speaking, all the maximized preventive things will stop, or be minimized, when the ball skip to the polit./town/area/country budget area, to be filtered.
It passed only if it's an real emergency (virus harbouring).

As I read from FT posts, those Italian tiger zones have now a massive media awareness with desinsections.
Until there were no infected niches things will remain without more efforts probably.

Frankly, I don't see a way to exterminate the tigers 100% in a land with many water arms (elsewhere nor the DEET, nor larvicides, exterminate them totaly).
