Study. Children and young Mexicans who receive the vaccine are between 9 and 16.

A group of 8,209 Mexican students between 9 and 16 years, voluntarily participated in international tests to measure the effectiveness of the first vaccine against dengue-resistant, four strains of the virus transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, reported yesterday the French drugmaker Sanofi Pasteur and the National Institute of Pediatrics.

The tests, which consist of three injections over 12 months, will be held in the states of Morelos, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatan, under the medical supervision of the National Institute of Pediatrics, the Health Ministry, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Universidad Veracruzana (UV).

Scientifically we can say that Mexicans will participate in Phase III testing, after already tested the safety of this vaccine in humans during phases I and II, which took place in Bankog, Thailand, with groups of less than 300 volunteers. No Mexican would be putting their lives at risk with this experiment.

To date 6 000 volunteers have already received the first dose, six months later a second injection and the final boost is applied one year after the start of this scheme. The test is conducted simultaneously in 15 countries with high incidence of this disease and be a total of 45 000 volunteers from 15 countries.

The same study has already begun in Australia, Brazil, Colombia, United States, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

According to the World Health Organization, every year 220 million people are infected with dengue in tropical and equatorial. Among them, 2 million children and young people develop the hemorrhagic form of dengue, which can cause life-long consequences or death.

"This vaccine is made from attenuated viruses," explained Dr. Fernando Noriega Chronicle, head of Clinical Development for Latin America for Sanofi Pasteur. "He trained with recombinant methods, using a mechanism that is used in the vaccine against yellow fever, which has demonstrated safety and efficacy. At the level of molecular biology could say that we use the basic mechanism of the yellow fever vaccine and it carries the dengue antigens. "

Although in 1944 invented the first vaccine against dengue, no longer exists in the market because they only protect against one of the four strains of the virus that causes high fever, joint pains and bleeding. This is the first quadrivalent vaccine and protect against all types of dengue
