Exeter study shows increased risk for younger people with Type 2 Diabetes

While the risk of dying from coronavirus increases significantly with age, scientists are urging caution to younger people with type 2 diabetes.

Researchers have found that a 40-year-old with the condition has the same likelihood of a fatal outcome after becoming infected with COVID-19 as a non-diabetic who is 60.

The study by Exeter University discovered that the increased coronavirus mortality from having type 2 diabetes rises the younger you are.

This means that while older people with the condition had a “COVID age” similar to their actual age, those who were middle aged with type 2 diabetes had a comparatively higher risk.

COLUMBUS – The next group of Ohioans eligible for COVID-19 vaccines includes those with conditions that put them at a higher risk of complications from the potentially deadly respiratory disease.

But cancer patients, those with chronic kidney disease and residents with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) aren't on the list – even though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says those conditions have the "strongest and most consistent evidence" for COVID-19 complications.

That's because Ohio prioritized conditions that started at birth or childhood and continued into adulthood, Ohio's chief medical officer Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said in a Friday interview.

For example, the list of eligible Ohioans includes people born with severe heart defects requiring regular, specialized medical care but doesn't include heart conditions, such as heart failure or coronary artery disease. Type 1 diabetes, known as juvenile diabetes, is on the list if the person has been hospitalized in the past year while type 2 diabetes, which most often develops after age 45, is not.

Considering the existing scientific evidence, warm and wet climates seem to reduce the spread of COVID-19. However, these variables alone could not explain most of the variability in disease transmission. Therefore, the countries most affected by the disease should focus on health policies, even with climates less favorable to the virus. Although the certainty of the evidence generated was classified as low, there was homogeneity between the results reported by the included studies.
