Kent's diary is on hand at the Vermont Historical Society's collection in Barre, Vt.
Kent survived, as did his children.
Sept. 24: "Sick, sick, sick... Had a high fever and awful headache every minute all day."
Sept. 25: "Peter Allen a painter and slater died at noon today at Heaton Hospital of pneumonia."
Sept. 26: "The paper says there are six or eight hundred cases of grip in town and five doctors are sick... Kate and the boys went to school in the morning, but came back in the forenoon & the paper says tonight there will be no school until Monday."
Sept. 27: "The grip rages in town."
Sept. 28: "4 more deaths of grip & influenza during the night. I knew but one and that was Andrew Tomasi, aged 28."
Sept. 29: "Mrs. Hassie Nichols died this morning at 9:30. Terrible times." (The last two words were underlined twice.)
Sept. 30: "Woke after breakfast went to work. The streets look deserted... Everybody is talking about the grip. 9 died on Sunday and 4 today. It's awful, awful."
Oct. 1: "The sickness is increasing hourly. Awful, awful!"
Oct. 2: "Police Lt. Ryan died at 10:00 tonight and Sarah Dailey died in Boston. 8 in all died in town through this night and over 40 have died in Barre in 3 days. It is awful."
Oct. 3: "25 have died in Barre today and it continues to get worse all the while... terrible times."
Oct. 4 "It is thought that there are about 1,400 cases in town."
The diary also records the passing of the peak.
Oct. 9: "Michael Flannery, an ex-lister, died this morning leaving 9 children... Not as many new cases in either town, but it's bad enough for now."
