Europe - Croatia: West Nile Virus equine cases reported

Gert van der Hoek

In Memoriam - Editor, Senior Moderator
From EPISOUTH

Location: West Nile

Event: Croatia

On 22nd August 2012, the Croatian Ministry of
Agriculture reported to OIE 2 outbreaks of West
Nile virus in equine, in Vukovar-Syrmia county, at
the border with Bosnia and Serbia (cf. map 1).

A total of 3 confirmed WNV equine cases have
been detected in the framework of active serosurveillance (no clinical signs).

Human and equine surveillance is
implemented in Croatia (cf. Note on 2010 &
2011 seasons WNV circulation in EpiSouth
countries):.

So far no West Nile Neuro-invasive Disease
(WNND) in human or equine has been
reported in Croatia.

Nonetheless, in 2011, a low intensity of WNV
was found in horses through sera testing. A
higher intensity of WNV was found through
seroprevalence surveys in horses in the
Eastern and continental parts of the country.

To date, within EpiSouth countries, Tunisia,
Greece, Palestine and Israel reported WNDD
human cases (cf. eWEB n?230); Greece, Italy
and Croatia reported WNV cases in equine.
