Date of submission: <HR>The idea for this special edition first came to us during a presentation at a conference that stimulated an unusually lively discussion in the audience about whether or not it was relevant for European countries to consider Chagas disease in blood donors.
In response to our call for papers [1] we received submissions from several European countries. After peer-review, we now publish a double issue with a set of articles that deal with diverse aspects of the disease such as:

- socio-economic aspects,
- clinical characteristics,
- congenital infection,
- screening programmes,
- and treatment.
