A note from the editors: Chagas disease ? neglected in Europe?

Date of submission: <HR>The idea for this special edition first came to us during a presentation at a conference that stimulated an unusually lively discussion in the audience about whether or not it was relevant for European countries to consider Chagas disease in blood donors.

In response to our call for papers [1] we received submissions from several European countries. After peer-review, we now publish a double issue with a set of articles that deal with diverse aspects of the disease such as:

• blood, organ and tissue donation,
• socio-economic aspects,
• clinical characteristics,
• congenital infection,
• screening programmes,
• and treatment.

Chagas disease has been classified as one of the neglected tropical diseases [2]. With this special edition we wanted to offer an opportunity for authors to present thought-provoking ideas as well as provide practical examples of initiatives to control Chagas disease in a non-endemic setting and prevent transmission. We hope that it will stimulate further lively discussions around this disease and what it means for public health in Europe. <HR>
