Cholera Outbreak in Jigjiga's Jail Ogaden
Saturday, 03 April 2010 16:34 Ogaden Online

Reports reaching our service desk from the city of Jigjiga confirm the outbreak of cholera in the one of the city's prison called Jail Ogaden. The signs of cholera were evident in the prison for the past couple of days however locals, due to their limited health knowledge and lack of presence of medical personnel in the prison, thought the symptoms were not cholera.

It is reported that civilians numbering between forty-five and fifty have so far died due to the cholera outbreak. There are hundreds of civilians still down with early signs of cholera. So far there are no reports of aid either from the Ethiopian government or military stationed in and around the city.

There are rumors swirling in the city and the prison its self that the Ethiopian military wants the cholera to affect as many people as possible hence the reason for a gag order on all city dwellers by the Ethiopian military barring the mention of the word cholera.

Our reporter who traveled to the area on foot indicated that the lack of clean drinking water and the availability of basic medical necessities such as glucose have exacerbated the situation. Our source indicated that many people who could have survived this cholera outbreak are dying because of the lack of clean fluids in the jail.
