Essex man dies from swine flu

AN ESSEX man has died of swine flu - but suffered no underlying health conditions, it has been confirmed today.
The man, who died at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, had no underlying medical issues.
It is thought to be one of the first incidents in the country where a person has died from the illness but not suffered from any other health problems.
NHS East of England, who confirmed the death, said in a statement: ?This case tragically underlines that, although the virus is proving generally mild in most people, it is more severe in some cases.
?As with all flu like viruses, some people are at higher risk than others. Unfortunately, people who are otherwise healthy could also become seriously ill or, sadly, die.
?The family has asked specifically that no further details be released to protect the confidentiality of their loved one.
?NHS East of England and Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family affected as they come to terms with their loss.?
The NHS East of England added: ?In the vast majority of cases swine flu is a very mild illness.
?However, if you have symptoms it is important that you talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, very young (under five), over 65 or have long-term conditions, such as asthma or diabetes, as you may be more susceptible to the virus.?
People are being urged to help protect the most vulnerable and do everything they can to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
Everyone can play their part, practising good hygiene and using tissues to catch all sneezes, throwing used tissues away and regularly washing their hands.
