Eradicating Avian Influenza Influenza Within Asean Region

Bandar Seri Begawan - Chairman of Asean HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) Task Force, Dr Kamaruddin Md Isa from the Department of Veterinary Services of Malaysia, told members to meet regularly in order to keep an eye on avian influenza .
The disease, according to him, is becoming more complicated and vaccines are not as effective. He said this in his speech at the 6th Meeting of the Asean Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Task Force, hosted by Brunei Darussalam at the Purple Jade Room, Centerpoint in Gadong yesterday. The meeting will come to a close today.
"This task force is thus very relevant to handle the problem and also to report it at the international level," Dr Kamaruddin said.
He hoped that the task force will address new issues or to come up with new approach to keep the disease under control.
The 6th HPAI Task Force was attended by the Focal Points of the Mean HPAI Task Force from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and relevant representatives from the Asean Secretariat, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (DIE).
Local representatives from Me Ministry of Health and the National Disaster Committee were also invited to join the meeting.
The Asean Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry have agreed to establish an Asean HPAI Task Force in 2004, to formulate a coordinated approach to prevent, control and eradicate HPAI in the Asean region.
Since the second meeting of the Asean HPAI Task Force in September 2005 in Kuala Lumpur, the Asean focal points have developed, discussed and finalised the implementation of eight components of a regional framework. Each of the component is coordinated by an Asean member country as the Lead Country.
The component and the Lead Countries arc made up of Disease Surveillance and Alert System (Thailand), Containment Measures (Malaysia), Stamping Out Policy and Strategic Vaccination (Indonesia), Diagnostic Capabilities (Thailand), Establishment of Disease Free Zones/Compartments fulfilling OIE Standards (Malaysia), Information Sharing (Singapore) and Emergency Preparedness Plan (Malaysia).
The meeting agendas among others, were to review the progress reports on the implementation of the Regional Framework on HPAI control and Eradication by Asean Lead Countries, Proposed Additional Strategic Areas to the regional framework in research and development/ technical cooperation (including expertise and resource sharing) outputs of the P and 2' Asean Workshop on HPAI Control and Eradication.
