A strange killer disease has been reported in Kyangwali Sub-county, Buhaguzi County, Hoima District but medics are yet to identify it. "Those who have contracted the disease vomit, get stomach crumps, intense headache, severe fever and later die," the LC5 councillor, Mr Tom Muhe said on March 31. "The unidentified epidemic has killed nine people in the villages of Mburara and Wairagaza in Butoole parish," Mr Muhe said. Patients are being admitted at Kyangwali health centre. But medical experts say there are no signs of an epidemic yet. Mr Muhe said he had notified district authorities to intervene. The Cao, Mr Walter Iriama, said the District Disease Surveillance team has rushed to the affected area to identify the disease and handleemergency cases.
The team is headed by the District Health Officer, Dr Joseph Ruyonga. "They have collected blood samples for testing to ascertain the epidemic," Mr Iriama said. The affected area is adjacent to Lake Albert, where the prevalence of sanitary related diseases is high. Mr Iriama said the patients delayed to seek medical attention from physicians and instead approached herbalists who failed to cure them. The Buhaguzi County MP, Mr Tom Kyahurwenda said he received complaints of the strange disease in his constituency. "I visited the bereaved families and notified several medical workers about it," Mr Kyahurwenda, who is a former district health educator, said. He said the relatives of the deceased claim that the victims could have been poisoned. "It is alleged that they died of food poisoning," Mr Kyahurwenda said. "They could have died of a bacterial infection," Dr Ruyonga said last Wednesday.)
