Two people in England have been diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus.

The patients are members of the same family and are the first English people to be diagnosed with it on British soil.

Until today, at least 161 people had tested negative for the virus but none had been diagnosed with it.

The infection makes England the 23rd country or territory outside of China to declare the infection has spread there.

The Department of Health said it would not reveal any details of who the patients are or where they are being looked after.

It did, however, confirm that they are not in Wirral, Merseyside, where people being evacuated from the centre of the outbreak will be quarantined later today

CMO confirms cases of coronavirus in England

Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, statement about cases of novel coronavirus in England.

Published 31 January 2020 From: Department of Health and Social Care

We can confirm that two patients in England, who are members of the same family, have tested positive for coronavirus. The patients are receiving specialist NHS care, and we are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus.

The NHS is extremely well-prepared and used to managing infections and we are already working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread.

We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately. We are continuing to work closely with the World Health Organization and the international community as the outbreak in China develops to ensure we are ready for all eventualities.

LONDON (Reuters) - The first two people in Britain to be diagnosed with the new coronavirus are being treated in a hospital in Newcastle, northeast England, Britain’s health ministry said on Friday.

[/h] The unnamed student has not been on campus since being infected and was not there in the period beforehand either, a spokesman for the University of York confirmed on Saturday evening.

He stressed the risk to staff and students is therefore low.

The pair - who are related - remain the only two confirmed cases in Britain of coronavirus, which has killed more than 250 people in China.

A quarantined Britsh patient threatening to abscond from coronavirus facilities has forced the Health Secretary to tighten quarantine rules, the Telegraph has learned.

Matt Hancock on Monday declared the spread of the virus to be a "serious and imminent threat" to the public, giving the Government greater powers to fight the spread of the virus, in light of recent confirmed cases in Britain.

A Department of Health statement said: "The Secretary of State has made regulations to ensure that the public are protected as far as possible from the transmission of the virus.

"The Secretary of State declares that the incidence or transmission of novel coronavirus constitutes a serious and imminent threat to public health, and the measures outlined in these regulations are considered as an effective means of delaying or preventing further transmission of the virus."

The number of people infected by the coronavirus in the UK has doubled to eight - after four more patients in England tested positive for the virus.

It comes as the government announced new powers to keep people in quarantine to stop the spread of the virus.

In order to do this the Department of Health has described the coronavirus as a "serious and imminent threat" to public health.

Confirming the four new cases on Monday, chief medical officer for England Prof Chris Whitty said they were all "known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France".
