Steve and Linda Brown of North Wilkesboro have started an endowment in memory of their daughter, Faith Amber Brown, who died when she was six years old...

For the Browns, the endowment also provides an opportunity to educate people about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever which is usually associated with tick bites.
?People don?t realize how prominent it is or how you can contract it,? said Mrs. Brown.
She said in 50 percent of the cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, ticks are not found or are not attached to a person?s body. A tick with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever can be infectious by crawling across a scratch or open sore on the body.
Faith?s symptoms included a headache, high fever, sore throat and a rash. Trips to the doctor did not result in helping her. She praises Wilkes Regional Medical Center?s treatment of their daughter, who sent her on to Brenner Children?s Hospital in Winston-Salem.
After 12 hours on life support, Faith died in Winston-Salem. The diagnosis at Brenner?s was Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
The illness has to be treated within seven to 10 days, said Mrs. Brown. Their daughter?s was not treated within that time...
