Elmira boy dies from swine flu complications

An 8-year-old Elmira boy stricken last month with the H1N1 virus died Tuesday of complications from the illness.
Elijah Nist, a student at Parley Coburn Elementary School, died Tuesday at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
?The Nist family is grateful for the support and countless prayers they?ve received for Elijah,? a statement released by the hospital said. ?He passed away (Tuesday) afternoon with his family around him. The family asks for privacy in their time of grief.?
The Elmira City School District has brought in extra counselors to help students and staff cope with Elijah?s death.
?Both personally and on behalf of our school district, I send (our) deepest condolences to Elijah?s family and friends,? Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said in a statement.
Elijah was hospitalized a month ago after coming down the H1N1 virus, commonly known as the swine flu.
According to an online journal kept by Elijah?s parents, Tracy and Jason, Elijah had no underlying health problems.
Two weeks ago, Elijah was declared free of the H1N1 virus, but he was still battling other complications, including pneumonia and staph.
Since being declared swine flu-free, Elijah?s condition had varied, according to the journal, which can be found at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/elijahnist.
The last journal entry, as of Tuesday evening, was posted Monday when Jason Nist said Elijah was having a ?rough day again.?
The post said Elijah was bleeding from his mouth, stomach and gastrointestinal tract, and his lungs had slowed down.
More than 44,000 people had visited Elijah?s Web page, as of Tuesday evening. Hundreds of people posted messages of support on the Web site.
