SPRINGFIELD -- About 30 percent of the students at Delaware Elementary School have flu-like symptoms and were absent on Tuesday. To try to keep the flu from spreading further, the district decided to close the school the rest of the week.

At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, district officials said Delaware has a high number of "medically-fragile students," which is another reason for closing the school. The school educates many children with handicapping conditions.

While the school is closed, the custodial staff will thoroughly sanitize the building. The district is not testing for H1N1 flu; administrators don't care if it's H1N1 or Type A flu, since both need to be treated similarly.

Administrators said 10 schools in the district have higher-than-normal absentee rates this week. They have no black and white line for deciding how high an absentee rate must be before a school is closed. They'll evaluate each school and the sickness conditions individually.

The second highest absentee rate this week is Bingham with 18 percent. District officials expect other schools will close by the time the flu season is over.

Jean Grabeel, the district's coordinator of health services, says,
since she joined the district in 1991, a school has not had to close because of a high illness rate.

District officials say schools will be getting H1N1 vaccine in the next couple of weeks. They don't know when they'll be able to start administering the vaccine. They also emphasized Tamiflu is widely available in Greene County to treat flu symptoms. Tamiflu also may prevent the spread of flu to a person who has taken it.

The district sent a letter home to parents of Delaware parents students to announce the dismissal. It also sent a recorded telephone message to Delaware parents and staff around 2 p.m. Here's the text of the telephone message, which is similar to the letter.

A Springfield elementary school reopened this morning.

School leaders closed Delaware last week because of flu concerns.

One parent we talked to says she's happy with how the district handled the situation.

And today students got to fill the hallways of this building after high absenteeism forced students to stay home.

More than 200 students were told to stay home last week.

On Tuesday the Springfield schools announced that more than 30% of students at Delaware had flu systems.

The Health Department warns schools to carefully monitor the situation when absenteeism rises above 20%.

The R-12 District made the call to close these doors for the rest of the week.

The school was sanitized before students were let back in this morning.

Today parents dropped off their kids after five days off.

"I think the school did a good thing by shutting it down, cleaning it. I just hope this is the end of it," said grandparent Jerry Lee.

Mother of a student Noel Perkan added, "you know, it's just life and it happens, so you just do the best and take care of your children"

Both Lee and Perkan had either a child or grandchild that came down with the flu. They were both able to able to stay home to care for them.

And we were happy to find out those kids are feeling better now.

When the school originally closed they said it was because of flu symptoms although they didn't specify the type.

Also Pipkin Middle School students are back today after a mercury leak. The school was sanitized and deemed safe over the weekend.
