ELCHO (WAOW) -- After classes end on Tuesday, the Elcho School District will close its doors until next week.

According to a news release from the district, a large number of students are out sick with flu-like symptoms.

The high absenteeism prompted school leaders to cancel classes and all after school co-curricular activities until Monday, November 2.

The closure includes both the Early Learning Center and 4K.
According to the same release, the Langlade County Health Department is seeing an increase in reported clinic and ER visits with influenza like illness.

A northern Wisconsin school district and a suburban Milwaukee elementary school are the latest to be shut down due to influenza-like illness, according to the daily school closing report from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

The Elcho School District in Elcho and Greenland Elementary School in Oconomowoc closed Wednesday and will remain closed until Monday because of the flu, bringing to 29 the number of schools and school districts that have shut down this semester because of high numbers of absenteeism caused by the flu.

Three schools shut down on Tuesday, including Prairie River Middle School in Merrill, North Lakeland School in Manitowish Waters and Martin Luther School in Neenah. They will reopen on Monday.

Public schools all across the state will be closed Thursday and Friday because of the state teachers convention in Milwaukee.
