Re: Eight Persons Succumb to Chikun Gunya

As many as eight persons have succumbed to chikun gunya at Kandamanur village near here within a span of four days and two members of each family have been affected by the viral fever, local government officials claimed.

This seems to be a rather quick rise in deaths in such a short period of time.

Demanding that the government take immediate steps to contain the spread of the virus, vice chairperson of Mayuladumparai panchayat union, Muthamizh Selvi Arivazhagan told PTI that majority members of the village were farm labourers.

I wonder what type of farms these villagers are laboring at?

The report of 8 people dying within a span of 4 days is very alarming and is cause for concern.

Re: Eight Persons Succumb to Chikun Gunya

My maps are not very useful regarding this, unfortunately, as it is far away from the beaten path in south-central India and the vast majority of reports. Like the other outbreaks, the presence of multiple family members sounds very h2h to me.

Re: Eight Persons Succumb to Chikun Gunya

That does seem to be a high death rate. I just came across this..

Chikungunya Prognosis
Most patients recover fully from Chikungunya virus infection. They get better after a few days, however sometimes joint pain can persist for a longer period after the other symptoms have disappeared.

Some deaths have been reported in a few countries but this may have been due to the inappropriate use of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs. As this virus can cause decreased platelets and result in bleeding one has to be careful that the drugs that are used do not further drop the platelets or cause bleeding due to gastric inflammation and erosions or ulcers(e.g. effect of Aspirin).
