Most Respirators are produced in Southeast Asia.

Most Respirators are produced in Southeast Asia.

The representative from 3M at the CIDRAP conference said that since most respirators are produced in Southeast Asia, a pandemic that starts in that area of the world would have negative consequences for respirator supply. I applaud Egypt's effort. In fact, there needs to be serious discussion internationally about respirator substitutes in a pandemic.

Personal Protective Equipment for Healthcare Workers During an Influenza Pandemic

The Institute of Medicine has formed an expert committee to examine research directions and certification and testing issues regarding the use of personal protective equipment during an influenza pandemic. The study will focus on various types of personal protective equipment for healthcare professionals. Many of the topics will have wider applicability to other industry sectors and the general population.
The committee will conduct a scientific workshop on February 22, 2007. The purpose of the workshop is to identify research directions, certification and standard setting issues, and risk assessment issues specific to personal protective equipment for healthcare workers during an influenza pandemic.

Project Scope </TD></TR><TR><TD width="100%" colSpan=3>The Institute of Medicine will convene an expert committee to examine research directions and certification and testing issues regarding the use of personal protective equipment during an influenza pandemic. The study will focus on face masks and respirators for healthcare professionals. Many of the topics will have wider applicability to other industry sectors and the general population.

As part of its data-gathering efforts, the committee will plan and conduct a public workshop to identify research directions, certification and standard setting issues, and risk assessment issues specific to personal protective equipment for healthcare workers during an influenza pandemic.

* Research needed to understand and improve the efficacy and effectiveness of personal protective equipment, particularly facemasks and respirators, for an influenza pandemic. Attention should be paid to research needed to improve functionality and to address human factors issues such as wearability, compliance, and communications.

* Necessary certification, testing, and standards development requirements, with attention to clarifying the roles of the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) within NIOSH, FDA, OSHA, and nongovernmental standards setting organizations.

* Priorities and resources for research and certification efforts.

The context for the study is the broader public health approach to addressing a potential influenza pandemic, but its focus will be on the specific issues related to personal protective equipment for healthcare workers.

A report will be issued that includes the committee's recommendations on next steps for research on personal protective equipment for use in an influenza pandemic.

The project is sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Lab (NPPTL).

The approximate start date for the project is August 19, 2006.

Not sure -- certainly the situation there this season is worse than last season in many ways. However, I would still take this as a precautionary measure. There's certainly a lot of manufacturing -- weaving and clothing manufacturing -- that happens in Egypt. Don't know what goes into making N95 masks (not even sure the article was talking about N95s). ?? At least the discussion is on the table there now, though.

Re: EGYPT - Talks about producing masks in Egypt

The article mentions "flu masks" and "protective masks". This could mean anything.

It is widely known that the world supply of N95s and N100s are not sufficient to meet world demand in a pandemic.

Any efforts to increase supply of protective masks that will help reduce the viral load is advisable.

Egypt - :applause:

I thought France just sent 30 million masks to them.I think they are in trouble there.

Well, France promised Egypt 30M masks -- don't know if they've been sent yet....

In any case, if a pandemic does happen, with an est. (2006) population of 78,887,007, Egypt would need a lot more than 30M masks!
