Statement of the Supreme National Committee to Combating Bird Flu
July 4, 2006

Within the following up of the ministerial committee chaired by Minister of Health Dr. Hatem el-Gabali, the committee held a meeting on Monday July, 3, 2006 with the participation of Minister of State for Environmental Affairs Dr. Maged George, UN Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza Mr. David Nabarro and the governors of Daqahliya, Qalyoubiya, Giza and Menoufiya.

The committee discussed the plan of the government to provide the vaccines necessary to vaccinate the birds against the deadly H5N1. This is besides launching an overall media campaign in the different mass media next September to increase awareness of the virus.

Besides, the committee tackled increasing Tamiflu packets to hit 1, 2 million. The committee also discussed future plans to combat the disease given that no infections among the bird have been reported since June 21. Dr. Nabarro noted that the possibility of virus' transfer among humans does not serve as a threat so far.

But, he called on the whole world to get ready in the future, particularly some cases among one family were reported in Indonesia.

Nabarro also lauded the performance and role of the government in the combat of the deadly virus. UN envoy vowed to provide some medical requirements which the Egyptian hospitals need in the treatment of human bird flu infections.

For his part, Dr. el-Gabali indicated that another conference will be held in Cairo on August 29 to assess the plans and the programs presented by the countries in the Middle East to combat the virus. Another meeting slated for July 13 will take place to benefit from the Armed Forces experience to combat the H5N1 virus.
