Egypt reports bird flu outbreaks in rural area - H9 - Min of Agr denies

Local authorities in rural Egypt have declared a state of emergency after detecting two outbreaks of bird flu

Nagy Awad, head of the veterinary agency in the southwestern province of al-Wadi al-Gedid, said Sunday that avian influenza was detected in two poultry farms in the villages of Ezab el-Qasr and Oweina in the Dakhla Oasis, located over 750 kilometers (470 miles) from the capital, Cairo

He said the infected birds were culled and authorities have carried out medical examinations of people who were in contact with them. The virus which is mainly spread through contact with infected animals, can cause severe illness or death in humans.

Egypt suffered a major outbreak of bird flu in 2006 that led to the suspension of all poultry exports. Authorities have been pressing to renew them, and earlier this year, the World Organization for Animal Health, an intergovernmental body, had declared Egypt free of bird flu for the first time in 14 years.
 
Veterinary campaigns intensified after the emergence of bird flu outbreaks in the New Valley

Dr. Naji Awad, Director General of Veterinary Medicine in the New Valley, said that the veterinary teams continue campaigns in farms, poultry shops, restaurants and fish farms, to emphasize the follow-up of preventive measures in the areas surrounding the foci of bird flu infections in the Dakhla Center.

He added that informative seminars were held in Dr. Sayed Seif's hall, in the local unit of the Dakhla Center, which included introducing the symptoms of epidemic diseases that affect livestock, such as foot-and-mouth disease, Rift Valley fever, lumpy skin, bird flu that affects poultry, methods of proper home breeding and symptoms of bird flu.

He mentioned that informative seminars were held in the villages of Al Maasara, Al Jadida, and Azab Al Qasr, with the participation of Dr. Muhammad Imam Sanusi, head of the veterinary unit of the mill, Dr. Salah Muhammad Muhammad Abdel Aal, head of the Azab Al Qasr Veterinary Unit, and Dr. Khalaf Ahmad Omar, head of the Mushia Veterinary Unit. Today, Sunday, the Veterinary Medicine Directorate in New Valley Governorate announced the emergence of two bird flu foci in two poultry farms in the Dakhla district .

Dr. Nagy Mohamed Awad, Director General of Veterinary Medicine in the New Valley, revealed that the first focus appeared in a farm in Azab Al-Qasr area, and the second focus was in a poultry farm in the village of Al-Owaina in the Dakhla district .

Egypt's veterinary directorate in El-Wadi El-Dedid has declared a state of emergency after finding two bird flu hotspots.

The hotspots are on poultry farms in Dakhla Oasis Governorate, one in Ezab Al-Qasr and one in Oweina village.

It is the H9 strain, known to infect people, according to the state-run Al-Ahram.

The infected birds have been killed and the people in contact with them examined.

In 2006 there was an outbreak of bird flu in Egypt which led to poultry exports being suspended. From March to August of the following year, 15 people died from bird flu...
 
Agriculture denies the existence of disease foci of bird flu in the New Valley

The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, represented by the General Authority for Veterinary Services, denied the validity of the news circulated by some websites about the existence of foci of bird flu in the New Valley Governorate.

The ministry confirmed in a statement that the governorate is considered one of the isolated areas within the Western Desert, which makes it characterized by a preventive dimension from the rest of the governorates of Egypt, and that the news is completely untrue.

At the end of the statement, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation appealed to all different media outlets and social media users to investigate accuracy and objectivity in publishing news and communicate with the concerned authorities to make sure before publishing information that is not based on any facts and leads to confusion in society

The Media Center of the Council of Ministers denied reports about the emergence of bird flu foci in poultry farms in some governorates.


The center stated - in a statement today, Tuesday - that it contacted the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, which denied the news, confirming that there is no truth to the emergence of any outbreaks of bird flu in poultry farms in some governorates of the Republic.


The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that all poultry farms in the various governorates are completely free of any epidemic diseases, as a comprehensive periodic examination of farm birds is carried out, and the transfer of live birds is not authorized until after ensuring their safety and free from any diseases or epidemics, referring to the World Organization for Animal Health. OIE, by officially including Egypt among the countries that adopt the Avian Influenza Free Facilities System.


Within the framework of the efforts exerted to promote and develop livestock and poultry by combating endemic diseases and dealing with imported diseases, a special strategy to combat bird flu is being implemented through active epidemiological investigation procedures that are carried out in all governorates and in bird markets, where vaccination campaigns against disease were implemented. Avian influenza and epidemic diseases in various governorates. Biosafety certificates have also been issued to farms that are verified that they comply with the biosecurity requirements after inspecting them.


It is noteworthy that Egypt is achieving self-sufficiency in poultry and table eggs and has a surplus for export, especially after it has been approved by countries that adopt the system of facilities free of bird flu, while the volume of poultry production in Egypt is about 1.4 billion birds and more than 13 billion eggs annually.


The Ministry called on all different media outlets and users of social networking sites to investigate accuracy and objectivity in publishing news and to communicate with the concerned authorities to make sure before publishing information that is not based on any facts and that leads to causing panic among citizens.
