CAIRO, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Egypt announced that seven new cases were tested positive for COVID-19 inside Egypt, making the total number of confirmed cases to 55, the Health Ministry said in a statement on early Monday.

"The seven new cases included four foreigners and three Egyptians, one came from Saudi after performed the Ummrah and the other two were in direct contact with an Egyptian returned from Serbia lately," Egyptian Health Ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

Megahed added the 45 cases that were found in a Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor have not carried any symptoms, noting "the cases that were tested positive have been transferred to a special hospital for isolation."...

(MENAFN - Daily News Egypt) A hashtag for suspending schools in Egypt on Twitter was trending as fears of the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) are on the rise, however, Minister of Education Tarek Shawki insisted there is no need for such directive.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday that countries with community transmission should consider closing schools, cancelling mass gatherings, and other measures to reduce exposure.

Earlier, Egypt's cabinet decided to halt all events and large public gatherings as well as the movement of large groups of people between governorates as part of preventative measures against the spread of COVID-19.

The Ministry of Interior also decided to suspend visitation for prison inmates nationwide for 10 days due the disease fears.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has also taken preventative measures by cancelling all sports events except international activities. It has also halted all events and sports gatherings of intensive density and has coordinated with the Ministry of Health to sterilise training areas.

The Egyptian Football Association's (EFA) normalisation committee also issued a decree to hold all upcoming football matches without fans in order to ensure the public's safety. "All matches are to be held without fans until further notice," the EFA said in a statement on Tuesday.

CAIRO, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Egypt detected 16 new cases of COVID-19, raising the confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the country to 126, the Egyptian Health Ministry said Sunday.

Over 300 families have been placed under quarantine in Egypt in a Delta village to stem the spread of the new coronavirus after two deaths were recorded this month originating from the area...

Egypt’s State Information Services (SIS) announced on Tuesday afternoon that the press accreditation of The Guardian’s Cairo correspondent Ruth Michaelson has been revoked.

According to SIS, the correspondent’s accreditation was revoked as a result of her recent article on the number of COVID-19 cases in Egypt which failed to meet ‘journalistic standards’.

SIS also issued a warning to New York Times correspondent Declan Walsh who had tweeted figures from a University of Toronto scientific study.

The decision by SIS came after 73 Egyptian scientists from around the world wrote a letter to the president of the University of Toronto decrying Dr. Isaac Bogoch, a clinical investigator at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute (TGHRI).

According to the signatories, Dr. Bogoch has tweeted false claims that the number of coronavirus cases in Egypt is 19,310. These claims, which come from a study led by Dr. Bogoch, were used in an article by The Guardian and tweeted by NYT’s Walsh...

CAIRO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian Health Ministry on Friday reported 29 new COVID-19 cases and one more death from the disease, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 285, including eight deaths.

The new cases included one foreigner and 28 Egyptians, who were in contact with previously announced cases or recently returned from abroad, said the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed in a statement.

The spokesman added that a 60-year-old Egyptian man, who recently returned from Italy, died from the COVID-19 infection.

According to the new definition, the first case is that a person is suspected to be infected with COVID-19 if they had any of the elements of the epidemiological history with the clinical symptoms. The second case is if a person had the three clinical symptoms altogether...

The ministry explained that epidemiological history's elements include:

1- If the patient had traveled or resided in any community or country where confirmed Covid-19 cases existed, within 14 days before symptoms appear.

2- If the patient contacted positive Covid-19 cases within 14 days before symptoms appear.

3- If the patient contacted patients with fever or respiratory problems from communities or countries with confirmed Covid-19 cases during 14 days before symptoms appear...
