15 April 2008 -- The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a 30-year-old female from Al-Matarya, Cairo Governorate. She developed symptoms on 2 April, was hospitalized and died on 11 April. The case was confirmed as being infected with A(H5N1) by the Central Public Health Laboratories and by Cairo-based US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) .
Investigations into the source of her infection indicate a history of contact with sick and dead poultry.
Of the 49 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 22 have been fatal.

CAIRO, April 16 (Reuters) - A 2-year-old Egyptian boy has been infected with the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, bringing the number of cases in the most populous Arab country to 50, state news agency MENA said on Wednesday.

CAIRO, April 16 (Reuters) - A 2-year-old Egyptian boy has been infected with the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, bringing the number of cases in the most populous Arab country to 50, state news agency MENA said on Wednesday.

MENA said the boy started showing symptoms of the illness on Sunday and was taken to hospital the next day where he was treated with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu. He was in stable condition.
A total of 22 Egyptians have died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu since it first appeared in Egypt in February 2006.
About 5 million households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of food and income, and the government has said this makes it unlikely the disease can be eradicated despite a large-scale poultry vaccination programme.

The case is a 2-year-old male from Al-Honsanya, Sharkea Governorate.

He developed symptoms on 13 April and was hospitalized on 14 April and is currently in hospital.

The case was confirmed as being infected with A(H5N1) by the Central Public Health Laboratories and by Cairo-based US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) .

Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a history of contact with sick and dead poultry.

Of the 50 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 22 have been fatal.

Boy's illness raises Egypt's H5N1 count to 50

Apr 18, 2008 (CIDRAP News) ? The World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday confirmed that a 2-year-old Egyptian boy has H5N1 avian influenza, which raised the country's case count to 50.
The boy is from Al-Honsanya in Sharkea governorate in northern Egypt, according to a statement from the WHO. He got sick on Apr 13 and was hospitalized the next day, the statement said. A notice from Egypt's health ministry said the boy received oseltamivir (Tamiflu), according to an Apr 16 report from the Kuwait News Agency.
Two labs, Egypt's Central Public Health Laboratories and US Navy Medical Research Unit 2 in Cairo (NAMRU-2), confirmed that his samples were positive for the H5N1 virus, the WHO reported.
An investigation into the source of the boy's infection revealed that he had had contact with sick and dead poultry before he became ill.
The boy's illness marked Egypt's second case in less than a week. On Apr 11, Egypt's health ministry reported that a 30-year-old woman from Matariya district, just north of Cairo, died of an H5N1 infection. Her death raised Egypt's H5N1 fatality total to 22.
