Bird flu kills young man in Egypt, bringing toll to 21
The Associated PressPublished: April 5, 2008
CAIRO, Egypt:

A young man died in northern Egypt from avian influenza bringing the toll of the deadly virus in the country to 21, said the state news agency Saturday quoting health officials.

Mohammed Idris, from the northern province of Beheira, was admitted to the hospital in the port city of Alexandria with a high fever and respiratory problems on Thursday and did not respond to treatment with Tamiflu, Deputy Healthy Minister Nasr al-Sayyed told MENA.

Idris makes Egypt's 48th case and 21st fatality from the H5N1 virus which has devastated chicken populations around the world, but has yet to become widespread among humans, despite fears the virus might mutate into something more virulent.

The virus is typically contracted by those involved in the care and slaughter of poultry, which in Egypt is generally women and children.

There has only been one other case of an adult male dying from the disease in the country.

Egypt's last fatality was on March 4, when a woman in Fayyoum oasis, just south of the capital Cairo, succumbed to the disease.

Egypt, which is a major route for migratory birds and home to nearly a billion chickens, according to the U.N.'s food agency, has the most human cases of the disease in the world after Indonesia and Vietnam.

CAIRO - An Egyptian teenager died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu on Saturday, the health ministry said, the 21st person to succumb to the virus since it was discovered here in 2006.

Mohammed Idris Hassan Ibrahim, 19, from the Nile Delta province of Beheira died in hospital, health ministry official Nasr al-Sayyed told the state MENA news agency.

"The boy had been taken to a hospital in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria on April 3 after complaining of high fever and shortness of breath," Sayyed said.

"He had been exposed to infected poultry," he said.

Ibrahim was the 48th reported case of human bird flu in the country.

In January, four people died of the disease in just one week, after safety precautions had been relaxed with the belief that the virus had disappeared when no case had been reported in six months.

Last month, a woman died from the virus in Cairo after she was unsuccessfully treated with Tamiflu.

Egypt's location on major bird migration routes and the widespread practice of keeping domestic fowl near living quarters have led to it being the hardest-hit country outside Asia.

The government says it is conducting a vigorous campaign to combat the spread of the virus through vaccinations and raising awareness, but experts and officials have warned against people dropping their guard.

Earlier this year, Health Minister Hatem al-Gabali warned against slackness in the preventative measures taken to fight bird flu.

Health ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin has repeatedly urged the public to remain vigilant and deplored the relaxation of precautions.

Officials have called for the banning of raising fowl in towns, and transporting them between provinces without authorisation.

They have also warned sick people that failure to report they have been in contact with contaminated domestic fowl makes it more difficult to detect the virus and to treat it.

Women and children have borne the brunt of the virus because of their role in taking care of domestic fowl.

The WHO said earlier this year that countries around the world had improved their defences against bird flu, but the situation remained critical in Egypt and Indonesia where the risk of the H5N1 virus mutating into a major human threat remains high.

A total of 238 have been killed by the virus worldwide.

Avian Flu Kills an Egyptian Man; Death Toll Increases to 21

By Abeer Allam
April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Egypt, the country with most deaths from avian influenza outside Asia, said a 19-year-old man died of bird flu, bringing to 21 the total number of people killed by the virus over the past two years.
Mohamed Idris, from the west Nile Delta province of al- Bohaira, developed a fever and breathing difficulty and was sent to Alexandria Hospital on April 3, Hamdi Mahmoud, a spokesman for the health ministry, said today in a telephone interview from Cairo.
``He was exposed to infected dead poultry at home,'' Mahmoud said. Idris was given Roche Holding AG's Tamiflu antiviral medicine but it was too late for him to survive, according to Mahmoud.
As many as 48 Egyptians have been infected with avian influenza, most of them have been women or girls handling household poultry. As many as five million Egyptian households raise chickens in their backyard for food or extra income.
The H5N1 strain of avian influenza is known to have infected 378 people in 14 countries since 2003, killing 238 of them as of April 3, according to the World Health Organization. Indonesia and Vietnam are the only countries that have had more human deaths than Egypt, with 107 and 52 victims respectively.

I believe the above comment shoud read "at least 48 Egyptians have been infected with avian influenza." The confirmed cases represent a LOWER limit. The confirmed mild cases suggest the true number of H5N1 cases in Egypt is MUCH higher than the confirmed cases.

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection.
The case is a 19-year-old male from Kafr El-Dawar District, Behera governorate. He developed symptoms on 30 March was hospitalized on 31 March and died on 4 April. The case was confirmed as being infected with A(H5N1) by the Central Public Health Laboratories and by Cairo-based US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) .
Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a history of contact with sick and dead poultry.
Of the 48 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 21 have been fatal.

The shortest interval I've found in WHO confirmed cases is 3 days in Indonesia (2006) and possibly a case from Egypt in March of 2006 with a 3 day interval.

Avian influenza ? situation in Indonesia ? update 32
25 September 2006
The Ministry of Health in Indonesia has confirmed two additional cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Both cases were fatal.
The first case occurred in an 11-year-old boy from East Java Province. He developed symptoms of fever and cough on 16 September, was hospitalized on 18 September, and died the same day. Poultry in the child's household began dying in the month prior to symptom onset, and poultry deaths continued thereafter in his neighborhood.
The second case occurred in a 9-year-old boy from South Jakarta. He developed symptoms of fever and a runny nose on 13 September, was hospitalized on 20 September, and died on 22 September. His history showed recent contact with sick chickens, which he kept as pets.
Of the 67 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 51 have been fatal.

There are less than 20 WHO reported fatalities with the inteval between onset and death of 6 days or less, most in 2005 and 2006.

In 2007, there was a 13 year old girl from Cambodia in April with an interval of 4 days.

Avian influenza ? situation in Cambodia
10 April 2007
The Ministry of Health in Cambodia has confirmed the country?s seventh case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. It is the first case to be confirmed in humans in Cambodia in 2007.
The 13-year-old girl, from Ponhea Kreak district in Kampong Cham province, developed symptoms on 2 April and was hospitalized the following day. She died on 5 April. Samples taken from the girl have tested positive for H5N1 at the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh.
Initial investigations into the source of the girl's infection indicate the presence of sick and dead poultry in the village in recent weeks and that she had consumed a sick chicken prior to onset of symptoms. A team from the Ministry of Health, WHO, and the Pasteur Institute are following up with close contacts of the girl and are conducting awareness raising activities in the area.
Of the 7 cases confirmed to date in Cambodia, all have been fatal.

Egypt: 22nd case of death from bird flu

CAIRO

- An Egyptian 30 years died of bird flu, becoming the 22nd person killed by the H5N1 virus since it appeared in Egypt in 2006, announced Friday the Egyptian Ministry of Health.

"Walaa Ahmed Abdel Geleel, ?g?e de 30 ans, est d?c?d?e vendredi (devenant) la 22e victime de la grippe aviaire parmi 49 cas annonc?s dans le pays depuis la d?couverte de la maladie" en Egypte, a d?clar? un responsable du minist?re ? l'agence officielle Mena.

"Ahmed Abdel Geleel Walaa, 30 years old, died Friday (becoming) the 22nd victim of bird flu among 49 cases reported in the country since the discovery of the disease in Egypt, said a ministry official at the official Mena agency.

According to Mena, the victim reported on the first signs of infection on April 2 and was transported Wednesday in a Cairo hospital, where she died.

C'est le second cas mortel d? ? la grippe aviaire en une semaine. This is the second fatality caused by avian influenza in a week.

Last Saturday, a young man of 19 years of age born in the Nile Delta died after being admitted to a hospital.

A woman died last month in Fayyoum, southwest of Cairo, after being treated unsuccessfully with Tamiflu.

In January, four people had died of H5N1 in one week after the precautionary measures had been relaxed because the authorities believed that the virus had disappeared and no new cases have been identified in six months.

Egypt is one of the countries most affected by avian influenza, behind Indonesia and Vietnam.

The country is located on a corridor for migrating birds that may be carrying the virus.

This high number of deaths may also be explained by the proximity of the places where is kept domestic poultry and living quarters.

The Egyptian government says lead a fight against the virus, by mixing vaccination campaigns and prevention, but experts warn against any relaxation of vigilance.

The spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Health, Abdel Rahman Shaheen has repeatedly urged the public to continue to observe the precautionary measures.

Officials have called for a ban on raising poultry in the city and transport without permission from between two volatile provinces.

The authorities have also warned that patients denied having been in contact with infected poultry complicated virus detection and treatment of the disease.

But despite such prohibitions, the Egyptians have retained the old habit of raising their chickens on the roofs of houses, where they can come into contact with infected animals.

Most of the victims are women and children because they are the ones who traditionally handle poultry on farms.

In late June, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) noted that the fight against avian flu virus had improved significantly over the world, but that the situation remains critical in Indonesia and in Egypt, where the risk of mutation of the H5N1 virus into a form contagious among humans remained high.

(OMS).

The H5N1 virus has killed more than 230 people worldwide since late 2003, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Bird flu claims another life in Egypt

30 year-old Egyptian woman’s death from H5N1 strain of bird flu is 22nd among 49 cases in Egypt.

CAIRO - Egypt's health ministry announced the death on Friday of a woman from the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the 22nd human death from the disease since it was discovered here in 2006.

"Walaa Ahmed Abdel Geleel, 30, died on Friday, the 22nd death from bird flu from among 49 cases in the country since the disease was first discovered (in Egypt), a ministry official told the MENA news agency.

She first showed signs of infection on April 2 and was taken on April 9 to a Cairo hospital, where she died, MENA reported.

Abdel Geleel's case was Egypt's second death from the disease in a week.

On Saturday, Mohammed Idris Hassan Ibrahim, 19, from the Nile Delta province of Beheira, died in hospital after being unsuccessfully treated with Tamiflu.

In January, four people died of the disease in just one week, after safety precautions had been relaxed in the belief that the virus had disappeared when no case had been reported for six months.

Egypt's location on major bird migration routes and the widespread practice of keeping domestic fowl near living quarters have led to it being the hardest-hit country outside Asia.

Despite a government ban on raising poultry on rooftops - an age-old tradition in Egypt - chicken, ducks and geese continue to exist on many rooftops, alongside a multitude of pigeon coops.

Officials have also warned sick people that failure to report they have been in contact with contaminated domestic fowl makes it more difficult to detect the virus and to treat it.

Many of those infected are fearful of revealing their symptoms as they would lose a source of revenue and they fear the anger of their neighbours throughout the village who may have their flocks slaughtered.

As a result, many sufferers are often hospitalised too late for medical treatment to work.

Women and children have borne the brunt of the virus because of their role in taking care of domestic fowl.

A national campaign to slaughter possibly infected birds is more often than not seen as a threat from authorities in which people have no faith.

The authorities recommend eating factory farmed chicken whose origins can be traced. Almost two years since H5N1 appeared in Egypt, the country has become one of the most affected in the world. The WHO said earlier this year that countries around the world had improved their defences against bird flu, but the situation remained critical in Egypt and Indonesia where the risk of the H5N1 virus mutating into a major human threat remains high.

CAIRO, April 11 (Reuters) - An Egyptian woman died of bird flu on Friday, the 22nd fatality and the 49th case of the disease among humans in Egypt, the state news agency MENA said.
Wala Ahmed Abdel Galil, 30, from the northeast Cairo suburb of Mataria, fell ill after coming into contact with sick domestic birds, the agency said, quoting the Ministry of Health.
The woman showed symptoms of the deadly viral disease on April 2 and was taken to a specialist chest hospital in Cairo on Wednesday. Doctors had been treating her with Tamiflu, the standard treatment for bird flu, the ministry added.
Seven Egyptians have died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu during the winter season now closing, less than in the previous winter. The virus, which first appeared in Egypt in February 2006, tends to be less active in summer.
About 5 million households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of food and income, and the government has said this makes it unlikely the disease can be eradicated despite a large-scale poultry vaccination programme.
Deaths from bird flu total more than 230 worldwide since 2003 and have been reported in several African and Asian countries. Egypt has been the worst-hit country outside Asia. (Writing by Jonathan Wright, Editing by Mark Trevelyan)
