Two Suspect H5N1 Fayoum Patients Transferred to Cairo

Recombinomics Commentary 12:51
March 12, 2008

Said Dr. Atta Hisham Youssef, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health brown, it has been transferred Mohamed spring Abdulhamid ?27 years? from the village dams of the centre worries to a hospital in Sadr Adviser Bakry Cairo to prove his two avian influenza.

In Fayoum, transmitted Dr. Hussein Sophie Abutaleb, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Mr. Muhammad Huda ?33 years? homemaker, from the village of Hobbies to a hospital after a physical one hour of entering the hospital salt Fayoum.

The above translation describes two suspect H5N1 patients who were hospitalized in Fayoum and then transferred to Cairo. Although the translations lack detail, suspect H5N1 patients transferred to Cairo frequently are confirmed.

These two patients followed recent confirmation of two other patients from Fayoum. Both had pneumonia. One (25F) has died, while another (8M) is in stable condition.

The clustering of cases in Fayoum remains a cause for concern. More detail on the suspect cases, and release of sequence data from the confirmed patients at the end of 2007, as well as the confirmed patients this year, would be useful.

More H5N1 Clustering in Fayoum and Menofia Egypt

Recombinomics Commentary 22:41
March 12, 2008

Sources official from the Egyptian Ministry of Health found new cases of infection contracted avian influenza governorates of Menoufiya, Fayyoum rising incidence of the disease in Egypt that to 49 cases.

The above translation described two more confirmed cases in Egypt, raising the total to 49. The two most recent cases are from Menofia and Fayoum, the same locations as the past three confirmed cases. Thus, if the above translation is correct, the five confirmed H5N1 cases this month are all from these two provinces. This type of clustering remains a cause for concern. Either the H5N1 in this region is becoming more efficiently transmitted to humans, or the level of surveillance has increased due to recently confirmed cases. However, 5 cases in two weeks from a relatively small area demands more detail.

Recently released bird sequences from Egypt identified an alarmingly high number of non synonymous changes, signaling a vaccine failure and rapid evolution. Thus far, in contrast to this time last year, all confirmed cases have developed pneumonia. Last season, most of the fatal cases were associated with M230I, which is widespread in poultry this season.

It has been almost three months since the December, 2007 cases were confirmed, yet no sequences from human cases have been released. The reasons for these delays is unclear. Last year, NAMRU-3, to its credit, promptly released sequence data. After NAMRU-3 became a WHO regional reference center, the transparency dropped dramatically.

Release of the sequence from December, 2007 is long overdue. Release of sequences from the spate of recent cases would also be useful.

The report must be outdated. Since Jan 1, 2008, there have been 4 WHO-confirmed human cases in Egypt (see Paragraph 1 which says three). There has also been one WHO-confirmed cases from Vietnam, Do Van Huong, an 11 year old boy who died on March 14, 2008. The fourth victim in Egypt this year is 8 year old Abdel Hamid al-Sayyed Yussuf who was admitted to the hospital on March 3, 2008. He apparently survived and recovered.

Regarding the bolded sentence in Florida1's post from last evening:
The reports emphasized that there had been no cases of the disease alter in Egypt or in the world so far. (Fla1 - What!?)

I think this may be a poor translation of the statement typically included in news articles reassuring the public that there is as yet no case of H5N1 "alter" in such a way as to make sustained transmission probable - i.e., no pandemic as of today in Egypt or elsewhere.

Bird Flu in Egypt - National Committee for Combating Bird Flu stresses retreat of disease 29/3/2008

The reports discussed by the National Committee for Combating Bird Flu in its meeting chaired by Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Ameen Abaza on 28/3/2008 said that cases of infection whether in birds or humans witness a continuous retreat as the cases detected during the first 3 months of 2008 reached 3 cases as compared to 15 cases during the same period of the previous year.

The repots mentioned that the recovery percentage for the children under 10 years reached 100%.

Spokesman of the Committee Ambassador Ayman Al-Qaffas said at a press conference on 27/3/2008 that the Committee will continue its meetings as long as the disease is there noting that a draft law was prepared for facing transmission of birds among governorates.

The law will be submitted to the People's Assembly for ratification and will include severe punishments, he added.

Egyptian man dies of bird flu - WHO official

(Adds background)

CAIRO, April 5 (Reuters) -

An Egyptian man has died of the deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus, bringing the number of fatalities in Egypt to 21, a World Health Organisation official said on Saturday.

Cairo-based WHO official John Jabbour told Reuters the 19-year-old victim had died on Friday after falling ill following contact with infected birds.

A 25-year-old woman died of bird flu last month.

It is the third winter the virus has struck after lying low during Egypt's hot summers.

The deadly virus first arrived in Egypt in early 2006.

About 5 million households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of food and income, and the government has said this makes it unlikely the disease can be eradicated despite a large-scale poultry vaccination programme.

Deaths from bird flu total more than 230 worldwide since 2003 and have been reported in several African and Asian countries. Egypt has been the worst-hit country outside of Asia.
