Still seems to be many "suspected cases", at least more than normal, especially with respects to what is being reported and not censored.

Egypt screens thousands of people for H5N1 per year.

Most never make it to the confirmed list.

We keep track anyway.

From what I can tell they are sweeping neighborhoods. Looking for illegally kept poultry and also anyone who is potentially sick. They are using the word "detained" quite a bit. I think they are screening many, many people looking for bird flu and swine flu symptoms.

If someone has symptoms they are "detained" at a hospital until the test results are in.

Let's be frank. They probably have 2009 H1N1 (swine) flu in Egypt. Once it is there, it can not be stopped. It is extremely transmissible. For many people it is also undetectable in those who have a mild case. Furthermore, in Mexico it is reported that as many as 1/3 of the patients who tested positive for H1N1 did not exhibit a fever. And - the test to detect H1N1 is only 70%, in the best case scenario, effective. So there may be some false negatives.

Add to this the recent group of young children who have had "mild" cases of H5N1 and it becomes apparent why the government has declared an emergency and why they are performing these sweeps.
