FAO Warns Against the Spread of African Swine Fever in EU Countries
By Metwalli Salem 5/10/2007

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned yesterday against the spread of the African swine fever to some European Union countries, which the organization said poses a very serious animal health risk and could lead to a dramatic situation throughout the EU region.

FAO also warned in a press release yesterday that the disease is highly contagious and could be fetal to pigs.

For his part, Chairman of the Egypt Zoological Association Sami el-Basti called for beefing up measures to inspect imported pork products, warning that the virus causing the disease could survive in these meats for at least six months, which calls for extra inspection measures on all products containing pork or pig fat.

This came as the General Authority for Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Agriculture responded to the FAO warning by beefing up inspection measures at entry ports on all imported frozen meats, particularly pork.

Head of preventive medicine at the authority Ibrahim el-Bendary said veterinary inspection of pigs in the governorates of Cairo, Giza and Qalyubia is currently taking place, adding that no suspected cases were reported so far.

There are between 323 and 333 thousand animals in Giza alone in Ard el-Lewa, Saft el-Laban and Baragil, and another 80,000 in Mansheyet Nasser, Qatamiya, May 15 city and 3500 animals in Qalyubia.
