CAIRO, June 2 (Reuters) - Egypt has detected its first case of the new H1N1 influenza virus in a 12-year-old American girl who recently arrived in Cairo from the United States, a World Health Organisation official said on Tuesday.

The case is the first in Africa and the 24th in the Middle East region, said Hassan al-Bushra, regional adviser for communicable disease surveillance for WHO.

"She is a confirmed case of H1N1 ... She has been been detected at the airport by the thermal detectors," he told Reuters, adding the girl arrived on a flight on Monday and the test was confirmed on Tuesday.

"She has been given treatment, she and her mother as well," he added. "She is in a good condition."

Egypt, already hard hit by the highly pathogenic bird flu virus, fears another flu could spread quickly in a country where most of the roughly 76 million people live in the densely packed Nile Valley, many in crowded Cairo slums.

The Health Ministry was seeking to contact 145 passengers who were on the same flight as the girl, who is from the U.S. state of Minnesota and is of Egyptian origin. She was thought to have arrived with her mother on a flight via the Netherlands.

Bushra said passengers would be told to watch for symptoms and immediately report to a doctor if they felt ill.

The virus, known as swine flu, spreads easily and mostly causes a mild illness. It has been diagnosed in more than 17,000 people in 64 countries, and has killed more than 100, mostly in Mexico, according to the World Health Organisation.

Egypt ordered the slaughter of all its 300,000 to 400,000 pigs on April 29 as a precaution against the H1N1 virus, in a move the United Nations said was "a real mistake".

CAIRO, June 3 (Xinhua) -- As Egypt has reported its first A/H1N1 influenza case, WHO's Cairo-based regional office said Tuesday night that this case might be the last one if local government and individuals adopt proper measures.

"It is not surprising that the A/H1N1 virus reached Egypt, which is the 64th country hit by the novel flu," Hassan el-Boshra, adviser for communicable disease at WHO's Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean, told Xinhua.
Discovering this case means that Egypt's measures are active and effective, el-Boshra said, adding that this case is coming from outside, so it is individual one and should not raise fears in current time.
"WHO may raise the alert level to six at any moment, it is more possible now than before, but some countries asked to change the way the organization evaluate the danger of the virus as it is weaker than H5N1," he said, referring to the low death rate of the flu.
"This case could be a start of new cases but it could be the first and the last one," he said.
Meanwhile, he advised the Egyptian government to follow the WHO instructions and the individuals to be more careful.
People should "wash hands with water and soap, avoid crowded places, cover mouth and nose when sneeze, if someone feels that he contracts the virus, he should stay at home rather than go to work, and should see a doctor as there are enough drugs. A 12-year-old Egyptian-American girl who came from the United States via Holland on Monday was confirmed to have contracted the A/H1N1 flu, WHO's regional office said Tuesday afternoon. The case is the first in the populous African country. Egypt, which has been hit hard by the fatal bird flu, decided in late April to cull all the pigs in the country to stem the highly infectious flu that has killed 115 people worldwide.

For his part, Dr. Sami Al-Taha - Member of the Veterinary Association, said that attention must be given to the fight against disease, swine flu at the expense of bird flu, adding that bird flu is more dangerous.

وأوضح طه أنه يجب توحيد جهود مكافحة مرضي إنفلونزا الطيور وإنفلونزا الخنازير في لجنة واحدة علي أن يتم توسيع دور الطب البيطري داخل هذه اللجنة.​

Taha said that the consolidation of efforts to combat bird flu patients and the swine flu in a single committee would be to expand the role of veterinary medicine within this Committee.

مضيفاً أن دور كل محافظة في مقاومة مرض إنفلونزا الطيور يقتصر علي مقاومة المرض بداخلها دون وجود أي نوع من التنسيق مع المحافظات الأخري وأشار طه إلي أن الوضع في مصر حالياً بالغ الخطورة في ظل انتشار مرض إنفلونزا الطيور وتهديدات إنفلونزا الخنازير مضيفاً أنه يجب تكثيف الوجود في الحجر الصحي والبيطري لمنع دخول إنفلونزا الخنازير إلي مصر.​

He said, adding that the role of each province to resist the bird flu disease confined to the resistance inside without any kind of coordination with other departments and Taha pointed out that the situation in Egypt is currently under a very serious outbreak of avian flu and swine flu threat, adding that it must be intensified in the presence of stone Health and vet to prevent the entry of swine flu in Egypt.​
