Five Suspect H5N1 Cases Menoufia Egypt

Recombinomics Commentary 14:36
December 31, 2007

In Menoufiya [Al Minufiyah], were detained 3 hospitals pathogenesis Mnov after the [suspected] injury Avian They are: Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, "57 years" and the spiritual Abed Rabbo, "50 years" and Mohammad Ferdous "36 years" .. Hisham Atta Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health had been taking samples of infected plants and sent to the central Ministry of Health for analysis.

The above translation describes three more suspect H5N1 cases in Menoufia, raising the number of suspect cases in the governorate to five. The most recent confirmed case was also from Menoufia, as was an earlier confirmed case. Thus, there are two confirmed and five suspect cases there.

There are also three confirmed cases elsewhere, in addition to multiple suspect cases. Confirmed H5N1 cases on commercial farms and backyard holdings are being reported daily (see satellite map).

This spike in H5N1 may ne related to new sequence migrating into the region, or the emergence of a more virulent strain.

Release of sequence data and human and poultry cases is critical.

An Egyptian woman who had been in contact with sick birds died of the
avian influenza virus on Monday [31 Dec 2007], the 3rd death in the
most populous Arab country from bird flu in less than a week, the
Health Ministry said. The ministry said in a statement that the
woman, a resident of Menoufia province in the Nile Delta, was taken
to hospital on Saturday [29 Dec 2007] and died early on Monday [31
Dec 2008]. "She suffered from a high fever and difficulty breathing
and had a pulmonary infection after coming into contact with birds
suspected of being infected with avian flu," the statement said. "She
was placed on a respirator but died at dawn on Monday [31 Dec 2007]."
The death was the 18th bird flu fatality and the 43rd human case in
Egypt since the deadly H5N1 virus arrived in early 2006.

It came a day after a 25-year-old Egyptian woman died of bird flu in
the Nile Delta city of Mansoura. Another woman died of bird flu on
Wednesday [26 Dec 2007] in Beni Suef province south of Cairo.

It is the 3rd winter that the virus has struck after lying low during
Egypt's hot summers, when it is much less likely to spread from one
carrier to another. The government has promoted a poultry vaccination
programme but coercive measures are hard to enforce. Around 5 million
households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of food and
income, and the government has said this makes it unlikely the
disease can be eradicated.

[Three of the 43 cases of human H5N1 avian influenza recorded in
Egypt since the beginning of 2006, and 3 of the 18 deaths, have
occurred during the past 7 days. The 3 cases appear to be
unconnected. The high mortality rate is worrying in view of the
previous success of the Egyptian authorities in treating avian
influenza virus patients. Hopefully this is a statistical aberration
and it does not herald the appearance of a virus endowed with
enhanced virulence for humans.

Bird flu takes more lives in Egypt
Tue, 01 Jan 2008 05:26:59

The number of fatalities from bird flu in Egypt rises to four as two more women die from the virus, which recently has become ubiquitous.

All four deaths involved women and were believed to have resulted from exposure to sick or dead backyard birds.

The recent deaths broke a 5-month pause in human cases in Egypt and brought the number of Egyptians who have died of the H5N1 bird flu virus to 19 since it emerged in Egypt in early 2006.

It is the third winter that the virus has struck after lying low during Egypt's hot summers, when it is much less likely to spread from one carrier to another.

The virus has killed more 214 people and infected more than 340 people since 2003, according to WHO.

Two Egyptian women die of bird flu virus

Mon Dec 31, 2007 7:11pm EST
By Cynthia Johnston

CAIRO (Reuters) - Two Egyptian women died of bird flu on Monday, bringing to four the number of fatalities from the virus in the most populous Arab country in less than a week as Egypt emerged from a warm-weather lull in avian flu cases.

All four deaths involved women and were believed to have resulted from exposure to sick or dead backyard birds.

Firdaus Mohamed Hadad of Menoufia province in the Nile Delta region north of Cairo was taken to hospital on Saturday and died early on Monday, Egypt's Health Ministry said in a statement.

"She suffered from a high fever and difficulty breathing and had a pulmonary infection after coming into contact with birds suspected of being infected with avian flu," the statement said. "She was placed on a respirator but died at dawn on Monday."

Later, John Jabbour, an Egypt-based World Health Organisation official, told Reuters a second woman had died of bird flu in northern Egypt. The health ministry identified the woman as Hanem Ibrahim from Damietta, also in the Nile Delta.

The four Egyptian deaths from bird flu over the past week broke a 5-month pause in human cases in Egypt and brought to 19 the number of Egyptians who have died of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus since it emerged in Egypt in early 2006.

It is also the third winter that the virus has struck after lying low during Egypt's hot summers, when it is much less likely to spread from one carrier to another.

On Sunday, a 25-year-old Egyptian woman died of bird flu in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura while another woman, Ola Younis, died of bird flu on Wednesday in Beni Suef province south of Cairo, the first case of this winter season.

Jabbour said the high fatality rate in the recent cases was likely due to a delay in diagnosis after patients and their family members denied exposure to infected birds.

"All of the new cases have exposure to sick or dead backyard birds. ... The problem is the delay in reporting that they have been exposed," he said. Patients are most likely to survive if they start treatment with Tamiflu early after symptoms occur.

Around 5 million households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of food and income, and the government has said this makes it unlikely the disease can be eradicated despite a large-scale poultry vaccination programme. WHO officials have said the bird flu virus was now considered endemic in Egypt.

Deaths from bird flu now total more than 210 worldwide since 2003 and have been reported in several African and Asian countries, as well as in Turkey and Azerbaijan. Egypt, with 43 confirmed human cases, has been the single hardest-hit country outside of Asia.

Health experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that spreads easily from one person to another, possibly triggering a pandemic that could kill millions.

Port Said -- where the family-of-four suspected cases are -- is only ca. 30 miles (ca. 45 km) away (as the crow flies) from Damietta where the deceased 50 year-old woman was from. (I'm not 100% sure, but I think she lived near to Damietta city -- not sure though.) I thought Port Said was farther away. Drat. Port Said is right next to the Suez Canal, btw.

Here's a map indicating Port Said, Damietta city, Ad Daqaliyah governorate where one confirmed (dead) case was from, and Al Minufiyah governorate where two confirmed cases (one dead) are from. The location of the fifth recent case -- Beni Suef -- is off the map to the south.
