According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a new case of H5N1 infection was reported in a 26-year old male from Elmanzala District, Dakalia Governorate; the man developed symptoms on 30 March 2013 and was admitted to a hospital on 5 April where he was in critical condition. He was then transferred to another hospital on 7 April 2013 and died on 8 April 2013. Confirmation with H5N1 infection was done by RT-PCR at Central Public Health Laboratories (NIC) and at WHO reference laboratory (NAMRU-3) on 15 April 2013. Investigations into the source of infection revealed that the case had close contact with healthy poultry (pigeons) a few days before the symptoms. Colleagues from the Veterinary services collected samples from the pigeons and the house environment, as well as from neighborhood poultry raising sites (backyards and farms).
