This has been and ongoing issue over the last three weeks,that i know of its also in other governorates not mentioned and has in some cases exhibited in people that have other normal flu symptoms also.

we visited one of the very large hospitals in the Helwan governorate and was told directly by the hospital it is a virus and they know what is causing it but again it sounded like they were not allowed to openly discuss what the virus was.

I asked a direct question at this point about the "virus" being another virus or related to the flu and only received a confirming silent nod of the head from the doctor indicating its flu related.

I asked about the use of anti virals and was told not without a prescription which requires testing first,I then asked for the test and it was refused by the hospital.

one of the areas hit hardest thus far is the biggest poultry production centers within Egypt.

Some areas of northern Egypt reported an outbreak of pinkeye
[conjunctival] infections with the number of cases close to 2000, the
official MENA news agency reported on Sun 24 Oct 2010. The number of
people infected with this viral conjunctivitis, known as pinkeye, has
risen to 1831, Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shahin
said, according to the report.

As many as 1703 cases are found in Daqahliya, 92 in Port Said and 36
in Damietta, the report said, adding most of the cases are students,
with 1042 in Daqahliya, 40 in Port Said and 12 in Damietta.

Pinkeye, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, may make the eyes
extremely red and can spread quickly, which usually causes no
long-term eye or vision damage.

[Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin layer (conjunctiva)
that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the
eye. Inflammation can cause blood vessels in the eye to become
larger, and that can make the white of the eye look pink or red.
Conjunctivitis is a common health condition worldwide. The 3 most
common types of conjunctivitis are viral, bacterial, and allergic.
Currently, outbreaks are occurring throughout the world (see
ProMED-mail references below).

ProMED-mail does not routinely report outbreaks of conjunctivitis
where there has been no identification of the etiologic agent. This
particular outbreak is reported because it embraces 3 contiguous
coastal governorates in the Nile Delta region of Egypt and is being
attributed to virus infection, although the species of virus is not
stated. Precise information would be appreciated, if available.

Low prevalence disease viral conjunctivitis in Damietta and injuries up to 2206Monday, October 25, 2010 Posted in date: Monday, October 25, 2010

Dr. Abdel Rahman Shahin, official spokesman for the Ministry of Health said the incidence of viral conjunctivitis in 2206 reached a state of provinces (Dakahlia - Port Said - Damietta)

Shaheen noted that the number of infected cases in Dakahliya was the case in 1968, and Port Said 182 cases, as was the number of infected cases, 56 cases in Damietta

Shaheen told the maintenance of the health survey and surveillance of the disease in all hospitals and primary health care units in all provinces

Shaheen explained that during the past 24 hours decreased the number of injuries the status of Dakahlia rain by 20% and there is a slowdown in the rates of proliferation, as there is no increase in rates in Port Said, also decreased rates of proliferation in Damietta by 40%.

It should be noted that these indicators show a low number of cases will be to monitor the situation in the coming days to ensure the continuation of the slowdown in the numbers of cases.

I think this group of people will push the total of cases past 2700 from only three governorates.

Another article i read said its being spread by respiratory droplets, which really sort of runs counter to the health ministry's claim of this being caused by the burning of rice straw and hulls.

The only flu virus that springs to mind that regularly caused conjunctivitis in affected people that I have seen reported in recent years are the H7 human outbreaks from the Netherlands, but there may be others.

However, any cocirculating virus with H5N1 or H1N1 etc is one to watch, so what are the options?

I read another article that said some students are being told to remain away from school for up to twenty days.

The only flu virus that springs to mind that regularly caused conjunctivitis in affected people that I have seen reported in recent years are the H7 human outbreaks from the Netherlands, but there may be others.

However, any cocirculating virus with H5N1 or H1N1 etc is one to watch, so what are the options?

I agree about H7. Some kind of reassort/mutation/recombination is always an option.

Telling students to take up to 20 days off school leads me to believe this is some kind of infectious disease issue, not environmental.

There is an ongoing conjunctivitis outbreak in Uganda, Sudan, and other bordering countries that the US CDC has determined has nothing to do with influenza (enterovirus, adenovirus, coxsakievirus, etc.):

I think flu is a very viable option in these cases.

Are we to believe that huge conjunctivitis outbreaks, on the scale of thousands, are not due to a virus?

I believe that ProMED post is saying that those outbreaks are indeed due to a virus; they are just saying that the virus is not influenza. The ProMED link gives a list of several viruses detected.

Since many countries in Africa are not testing for influenza, it has to stay on the list of potential causes of large conjunctivitis outbreaks.

my wife had the red puffy eye thing about a week ago along with a runny nose. and the hospital told us its the flu.my little girl has been sick for almost a month now with what appears to be flu based on her symptoms,about a week ago she developed a really bad cough with a high fever. after a couple of days she complained from her eyes hurting and they weeped a little bit but only for a couple of days.

yesterday when they told my son not to return to school until his flu clears,he came home with puffy red eyes, sore throat,runny nose and a bit of a cough his eyes also were a bit weepy and are still watery.


sure looks like the flu to me.

the article below clearly says the hospitals were told not to discuss this issue with the media.

it could be we have two virus now circulating in this area.

وقال الدكتور أيمن محمد رجب، وكيل وزارة الصحة بالمحافظة: ?إن مرض الملتحمة المنتشر فى المطرية هو مرض فيروسى وبائى ينتقل بسرعة من المصاب للسليم بالملامسة، لكنه مرض بسيط وليست له مضاعفات، حيث ينتقل وتتزايد الأعداد حتى تصل إلى ذروتها ثم يخبو ويندثر بعدها دون أن يترك أثراً أو إصابات شديدة ووضعت مديرية الصحة الأساليب الطبية للسيطرة على المرض وتقليل انتشارة وتم أخذ عينات ومسحات من المصابين وأرسلناها إلى معامل وزارة الصحة للتعرف على الفيروس وسبل القضاء عليه بسرعة?.
