Re: EGYPT - April 3, 2007+ - News on confirmed/suspected cases

So, since the last report from Feb 11th of total number of sus cases in Egypt...

Apr 03, 2007 - 2,862
Feb 11, 2007 - 2,292

Feb 11 - Apr 03 (ca. 7 weeks) = 570 sus cases

Re: EGYPT - April 3, 2007+ - News on confirmed/suspected cases

This then explains the meeting in Cairo by WHO last month. I applaud the Egyptian government for recognizing the need to publish the actual number of suspected cases. Given the potential financial repercussions for sharing this with the world it was a bold yet wise decision. Part of the rationale might be due to the generally milder form the disease is exhibiting. While this does give us a glimmer of hope it should also remind us that H5N1 is here and here to stay.

Comparing the numbers for each of these governorates mentioned in this latest report to the numbers from the previous report on Feb 13, we can calculate how many suspected cases there have been in each of them during the last 7 weeks:

Kafr El Sheikh: 19 new sus cases in the last 7 weeks
Al Gharbiyah: 74 new sus cases in the last 7 weeks
Cairo: 29 new sus cases in the last 7 weeks
Giza: 72 new sus cases in the last 7 weeks
Aswan: 33 new sus cases in the last 7 weeks

[One (or both) of the numbers is wrong for Al Minufiyah governorate -- they can't have had less sus cases in this report (229) than the last one (272). Maybe the new figure was supposed to be 329? Dunno.]

Note that these are not all of the new sus cases for the last 7 weeks -- there were 570 totally according to this latest, official report. The ones listed above only amount to roughly half of that.

Edit: Here are the original figures ... Feb --> Apr

Kafr El Sheikh: 340 --> 359 [+19]
Al Gharbiyah: 267 --> 341 [+74]
Cairo: 262 --> 291 [+29]
Giza: 207 --> 279 [+71]
Aswan: 14 --> 47 [+33]

From Min of Health:

Egyptian committee: H5N1 human-to-human transmission inaccurate

An Egyptian anti-H5N1 committee said that the two human bird flu cases detected at a house were caused by contacts with infected birds.

It denied that the reported cases were caused by human-to-human transmission.

It is possible that H5N1 can transmit among people, the committee said, but this transmission has not been reported anywhere around the world, it added.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is ready to deal with such possibilities through pre-set plans and programmes, the committee said.

It said that 32 Egyptians have tested positive for the avian flu since the virus was first detected in Egypt in February 2006.

Sounds like there's been a bunch of recoveries among the kids. :) According to this report, there are only two left in hospital at the moment -- one of whom is this newly confirmed 2 yr old (I think?):

Hat-tips to AnnieB -- for pointing out the probable identities of these two sus cases (they are probably the 2 sus cases from Al Minyah as reported in this article) -- and to pugmom for the translation!

Edit: Note that they are both from in/around Bani Mazar -- the same place that the most recently confirmed case is from.
