Authorities report first H1N1 death this winter

Ministry of Health authorities on Wednesday reported yet another fatality caused by the H1N1 virus (otherwise known as swine flu), bringing the total number of H1N1 deaths in Egypt to 284. The victim was a taxi driver from Berket al-Sabae in Monufiya.
Authorities say they also discovered cases of avian flu in several governorates.
Ahmed Fouad, a local health official in Monufiya, said health teams discovered 89 new areas of avian flu outbreaks in the northern governorate.
Health authorities have slaughtered thousands of infected birds and vaccinated the rest to prevent a spread of the infection.

Officials in the Nile Delta governorate of Menoufeia have declared a state of high alert following the death of an H1N1 patient and the detection of 89 infected areas.
The Nile Delta governorate of Menoufeia announced a state of high alert following the death of an H1N1 patient and the infection of two others on Monday.
Authorities have said they detected 89 highly infected areas with the bird flu. Experts say all infected cases were among home-bred birds and authorities added that the infection spread is being managed by the slaughtering of all infected birds.
Hisham Yousef, a ministry of health official in Menoufeia, said that hospitals also announced a state of high alert and readiness to receive patients suspected of either H1N1 or bird flu. Doctors have been trained to detect the cases and transfer them to central hospitals. Samples are also immediately sent to the central labs for examination.
