(Gainesville, Florida) - Dr. Gary Butcher, a leading world expert in poultry medicine, generally recommends several procedures to cope with an outbreak of H5N1 in a poultry population. Dr. Butcher, a professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, has been consulted on many of the world?s H5N1 outbreaks amongst chickens.

His basic recommendations are: 1) establish a quarantine zone for poultry 2) cull infected poultry populations and any populations within the zone, 3) dispose of destroyed poultry on site, 4) establish rigorous and effective reimbursement program for destroyed chickens, 5) ban live chicken markets, 6) vaccinate in a controlled setting only as part of an entire program.

One of the most important factors to a successful program for H5N1 containment is the reimbursement program for citizens to turn in their poultry says Dr. Butcher. ?You have to have an incentive program built-in so people are actually encouraged.?

Dr. Gary Butcher received his DVM degree from Purdue University in 1981. He then pursued a Master's degree at Texas A&M University and was awarded that degree in 1984. After receiving his PhD, also from Texas A&M in 1987 he pursued an academic career in avian/poultry diseases and their prevention. He accepted the position of extension veterinarian at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988.
