Ecuador reports measles cases for the first time since 2018

At least two children with measles have been diagnosed in Ibarra. The Ministry of Health started a massive vaccination campaign in that city.
The appearance of two cases of measles in Ecuador worries the health authorities. On November 19, 2022, the Ministry of Health alerted that an eight-month-old baby was infected with this disease in Ibarra.
This is the first case of measles officially reported by Ecuador since 2018, when the last outbreak of this disease was registered, which is considered eradicated in Ecuador...

Until Sunday, November 27, Ecuador registered 2 confirmed cases of measles in the San Antonio de Ibarra parish, in Imbabura; and 16 suspected cases of this disease in that and four other provinces, according to a report from the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

In Imbabura, a province that belongs to Zonal Coordination 1, a total of 11 suspected cases had been reported as of Saturday, November 26; in addition, one in Carchi, one in Sucumbíos, one in Pichincha and two in Manabí, detailed the State portfolio.

Given this, the Ministry of Health reported that on Saturday, November 26, it activated the National Outbreak Control Technical Committee "as one of the actions aimed at documenting the measures carried out for prevention and control to avoid the reintroduction of measles in Ecuador." .

He added that he maintains joint surveillance and vaccination actions with institutions, decentralized governments, NGOs, universities and priority communities to establish strategies and lines of action to prevent the transmission of measles in the country.

In these sectors, after surveillance, two vaccination strategies are carried out: documented sweeping in the areas of residence of the cases and suspects; and vaccination of the captive population in educational centers.

The vaccine is applied indiscriminately to all children over 6 months and under 11 years of age, through health brigades to meet the goal of immunizing 95% of this child population.
