Ecuador has already exceeded 23,000 cases of dengue so far in 2023. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) to this newspaper on the afternoon of this Thursday, November 9.

The MSP announced that, according to epidemiological week 44, from October 29 to November 4, 23,387 cases were registered in Ecuador.

This figure alerts the medical community, as there is an increase of 42% this year when compared to the dengue figures that were recorded throughout 2022 (16,402) in the country. And this figure, 23,387, is the highest in the last seven years.

In 2015 there were 42,000 cases of this disease, and that has been one of the highest figures.

According to the MSP, the province with the most cases in the entire country is currently Manabí. There are 6,649 cases reported there.

Infectious disease doctor Washington Alemán, professor at the Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo (UEES), explained that there is apparent neglect of dengue surveillance since the COVID-19 pandemic; that there is no primary intervention to control the reproduction of larvae in their initial stages.

Furthermore, since there is no National Service for the Control of Diseases Transmitted by Arthropod Vectors (SNEM), there is no adequate monitoring of this problem and it only focuses on the number of patients assisted; That is, it is more welfare-oriented.

The doctor added that at the threshold of winter and the El Niño phenomenon, more cases of this infectious disease will be reported.

Epidemiologist Jhonny Real, former head of Epidemiological Surveillance of the MSP, said that dengue at this time causes epidemic outbreaks in an explosive manner (large number) in historical sites of high transmission, such as the increase in breeding sites in places that have not been endemic or not. If there has been transmission, there will be cases.

As an example of this, several provinces are evident, such as Cotopaxi, with an increase of 238 cases, and 512 in Loja, in inter-Andean valleys up to more than 2,000 meters above sea level. (YO)
