Weekly influenza surveillance overview highlights
? Influenza activity caused by the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) is well past its winter peak in EU/EEA countries. Of the 23 countries reporting this week, all but one reported low influenza intensity.
? Sporadic activity and no geographic spread were reported in the majority of the countries reporting.
? Of the 466 specimens collected by sentinel physicians, 19 (4.1%) were positive for influenza virus continuing the declining trend seen over the past few weeks.
? Although circulation of the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus has diminished, there is still no evidence of wide circulation of other influenza A viruses apart from few influenza A(H3N2) and B viruses.
? The number of reported severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases continues to decline. In week 07/2010, of the 16 SARI cases for whom underlying conditions were documented, six (38%) had no known underlying condition.

WHO Determination of the 2009 influenza A(H1N1) pandemic status ? Statement from the Director-General following the seventh meeting of the Emergency Committee
The World Health Organization (WHO) ?Emergency Committee? for the 2009 pandemic held its seventh meeting this past week. The WHO Director-General sought the Committee's views on the pandemic situation and temporary pandemic measures. In light of the current epidemiological evidence and other relevant information, the Director-General was advised that there should be no change in the pandemic phase. She therefore decided to continue to monitor the situation and developments closely and to convene the Committee again after another several weeks. She was also advised to continue with the same public health measures. The Director-General?s statement following the meeting are on WHO?s website. A press briefing by the DG?s Special Adviser on Influenza, Keiji Fukuda, speaks to the thinking behind the statement.
