In its weekly Communicable disease threats report (CDTR) ECDC provides a bulletin intended for epidemiologists and health professionals in the area of communicable disease prevention and control.
Between the 19 and 25 February 2012, ECDC monitored two threats across the European Union (EU).
Three EU Member States reported measles outbreaks during the past week: the United Kingdom, Spain and Sweden. The latest figures and analyses can be found in the latest European Monthly Measles Monitoring report.
The Ukraine, as an EU neighbouring country, reported new cases and the Russian Federation is currently preparing a mass vaccination programme for children following the increasing number of national measles outbreaks.
Influenza activity continued with medium to high intensity in week 8, though without any clear geographic progression. The national influenza season epidemics may be approaching their peak in the first affected countries and remain dominated by the A(H3) viruses. For detailed information read the ECDC Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview.
Summarising information gathered by ECDC through its epidemic intelligence activities regarding communicable disease threats of concern to the European Union, the CDTR also provides updates on the global situation and changes in the epidemiology of communicable diseases with potential to affect Europe, including diseases that are the focus of eradication efforts.
